Help with opportunities?
« on: August 24, 2011, 01:26:09 PM »
Now, I'm aware that there *probably* isn't a way to help trigger more opportunities, but I'm running into a lot of trouble. You see, I'm testing a dynasty founder for the suitability of traits and the viability of gardening as a carreer for a founder in Riverview...And she's an adult a few days in, and has only ever had 3 opportunities fire. While I completed 1 and am waiting for my cheese to grow up for the second, the third involved travel and was therefore not something I could try. In short... I'm starting to worry about her getting enough black ops. I'll probably start doing some town events stuff, but before that... I'd like to know. How exactly do opportunities work? What triggers the request, anyway? Is there a counter or something?

First of all, are you sure that you didn't check the box in options that says supress oppurtunities?
And second, for my first gen even though he supermaxed gardening I got more ops from fishing.
And if you already have a skill op selected you cant get a new one until you either finish the current one or you cancel it.

I don't have an answer to your question about what triggers opportunities, Deme.  But when I was doing my Dynasty I had the same problem with the self-employed careers.  As you said, I wound up having my sculptor attend several town events to get the opportunities.  And with the later generations, I dealt with that problem by having the Painter, Writer and Nectar Maker all take rabbit-hole jobs first just to get the work opportunities.

Welcome to our Forum, Deme.

Technically, the opportunities seem to trigger randomly.  However, if you start something new, such as a new job or a new skill, opportunities will start to fire for the new things your Sim is working on.  Just be careful that you don't have overlapping opportunities among your immortals.  Another thing to consider is that when you have children, they will have opportunities starting when they go to school.  Again, you can use these as long as they don't overlap.

I agree that opportunities did come randomly. My sim works as self-employed inventor and there wasn't much opportunities until she aged up to an adult. However, I found that opportunities related to celebrities are quite frequent and they tend to repeat the same task.

What I've noticed with the LTH rewards is that whatever your Sim is focused on (as Pam specified) those wishes will come up. I'd have a sneaking suspicion that this would work with opportunities as well. Try flooding your Sim with gardening tasks-though you'll have to complete the cheese task before a new one will prevent itself.

Though, this (cheese task) is included in the omni series and for those to pop up I've found it good to not have anything else pending. GL.

For ease of understanding, I assume you meant present itself (show up), not prevent itself (keep itself from showing up).

This is some interesting stuff... I think in the end I'll save myself the worry by making my founder a businesswoman eventually. Still, it'd have been neat to find some of the underlying system to opportunities. But boy do opportunities hate my gardeners.

I started my dynasty with a sim supermaxing gardening, too, but I played him in the science career, because I knew it would give out some opportunities. If you know gardening already, you can rise through the ranks of that pretty quickly.

I've also read that you get more opportunities if your sim is out and about as opposed to being on the home lot often.  So try visiting places like the diner, bistro, or the park harvesting wild plants or picking up seeds.  It may trigger them more frequently for you.
