My Kleptomaniac Sim's lifetime wish is to possess 50,000 worth of stolen goods. It is called "possessions is nine tenths of the law". I wanted to know if I returned the stolen objects via mailbox, will its value be deleted from the value achieved by my Sim towards her lifetime wish?
In other words, to fulfil this wish, do I have to keep all the stolen objects in my inventory until achieving the wish or can I return them ?

You have to keep them. Just go for cars that sims have. It's easier to complete the LTW that way.
And why is this in Ambitions?

Yes, like Sportsfan said you should keep everything in the family inventory. That's the main penalty of this lifetime wish, I guess, you can't sell anything before you complete it.
