Toddlers & Blocks Table
« on: February 16, 2010, 01:36:31 PM »
I was just reading Carl's parenting guide and happened to notice that there was one important skill building tool for kids left out.  The Blocks Table! :)  Both toddlers and children can use it and it raises their mechanical skill.

I *think* children get the skill boost and fun from it and toddlers only get fun, but I've not played any children recently to check.

Helen is correct, toddlers get fun and if they have been taught to talk, then they can chat with another toddler.  Children get Handiness skill from playing at the table.

I never knew they could learn handiness skill from it! Or that if they know how to talk then they can socialise with other toddlers!

And they definitely need to know how to talk.  I tried it with toddlers who don't and it didn't do anything at all for them except they had fun.  No socializing and no relationship growth.

So if they never learn how to talk they will never be able to socialize when they are child, teen, young adult and so on? I wonder that if that's right how they will respond to toilets later in life. I mean: will they even know how to use them, or will they always leave a mess behind?

If as toddlers, they do not learn how to talk, walk and potty, that does not carry over to childhood and beyond.  The only effect of them not learning these things as toddlers is that you will not get to choose the next trait, it will be chosen for you.

I was playing a family, the toddler was at the blocks table and the mom was watching tv.  I couldn't figure out who she was talking to until I saw the thought bubbles over both the toddlers and moms head.  I thought that was really cool, the two of them carrying on a conversation like that, but they had taught the toddler how to talk, so that might have made a difference.

I like to send my children out with a good life ahead of them*, so when it comes to toodler skills, I'm your girl!
It does raise your handiness skill quite a bit; level 3 in fact.

*Meaning giving them a lot of skills they need, and handiness is a big one.

The blocks table doesn't do anything for toddlers.  They have to be children for it to help on handiness skill.  It can get as high as level 3 if they max out on the blocks table.  Otherwise it will be level 1 or 2.

How were you able to tell that the skills came as toddlers playing on the blocks table and not as children?  When children play on the blocks table, they have the blue skill progress bar over their heads to show which blocks level they're on.  That then translates to Handiness skill when they learn Handiness as a teen or adult.  The toddlers don't have any kind of skill progress bar over their heads when playing the blocks table.  Make sure you're not talking about the pegbox toy.  For that one, yes, a toddler gains skill in logic.  But the blocks table is the big one that more than one toddler/child can play at the same time.
