Instaling items whilst having the game running in background?

Sorry about the long title. Couldn't think of anything else to describe my issue correctly.

As it says, is there possibly a way to install items (sims3packs - CC, store items) whilst having the game running in background? It's really unconvenient to save/quit the whole thing in order to install a wall lamp or something. I had the task manager running too, so I checked to see if the process name (Sims3Launcher.exe) was in the provided list, and indeed, it was there. However, I have also noticed that when installing items, a new process starts, besides the usual launcher one, TSRW.exe, the same one as for the initial game, is it possible that you can't install items when the game is running because it's the same process? Is there any workaround?

How about using that store button in the game? I always have it turned off so I'm not sure how it works, but you're supposed to be able to shop and install while the game is running, right?

I have it off to, it makes my game render faster.

But I had it on for a while. I tested it once, when I had my internet on while playing, and, well, I got confused as heck. If anyone could link to a tutorial or something... Google.

Most of the time when I install items, it is while my game is running.  I do it through the download dashboard.  So my game is open.  I can do it from the main menu screen or during game play.  I have never had a problem doing it that way.  But installing with my game minimized (running in the background) usually makes it hiccup, run super slow for a bit or crash.
