Glossary and Generally Accepted Acronyms (GAA)
« on: August 15, 2011, 11:29:41 AM »
In the Forum Rules, there is a line about avoiding web acronyms.  This is a good thing.  However, there are Sims-specific acronyms that seem to be acceptable on these forums. Additionally, there are Sims-specific terms that we should all know.  I'm sure Carl would prefer if we spell everything out but every now and then, acronyms do appear in these forums.   At least with this guide, if one of these acronyms should slip in, all readers will understand precisely what is meant.

Since I didn't see a thread outlining these terms and acronyms, I thought it might be helpful to start one.  It might be of particular use for anyone new to the franchise, those who don't have all the expansion/stuff packs or those who are new to these forums.  I hope I'm not overstepping my boundaries here.

Right now, this is in very rough form.  If it is allowed ((edit: looks like it's allowed, since Carl said so :D)), I'll edit it with additional terms and acronyms and I'll provide better definitions.  I'll organize/alphabetize it as well.

*** Edit:  In addition to cleaning up some of the entries, I have alphabetized the list.  I considered organizing it by type (Expansion Packs, general terms, etc.) but I figured if a user doesn't know what a term is, they wouldn't know which category to look at.  Having just a plain alphabet-based guide is probably more user-friendly.  I also tried to bold all the cross-references.

I believe that this would be acceptable, though I'm not in any position of authority.

I personally think it is a fantastic idea. I remember being a new member and not understanding the acronyms sometimes.

If we have one you missed, should we post it in this thread, or would you rather us PM you?

I noticed one mistake only, LTW stands for Lifetime Wish, not Long Term Wish. ;) Anyway, fantastic idea!
Well, that's your opinion, isn't it? And I'm not about to waste my time trying to change it. - Lady GaGa

I think this is a good idea too.  I remember when I first joined the forum, I had no idea what people were talking about when they referred to "vanilla" and it took a while for me to get up the courage to ask.

Thanks for the encouragement and additions!  I'd be more than happy to maintain the list.  As far as corrections and additions, mentioning them here would probably be best.  That way, everyone could see them even if I don't get them up on the list straight away.

This was a good idea. Someone who just bought vanilla Sims 3 would be lost seeing some of those. Give it some time to develop and I'll mirror it on the guide.

Brilliant idea!  There is also LTR = Lifetime Reward :)

I had no idea what vanilla meant, took me a few months to figure it out lol.

Perhaps CAP, Store and Simpoints should be defined as well? Also CAS should note that it also stands for Create a Style.
