Can Sims games be transfered from DVD to CD?
« on: August 12, 2011, 04:30:35 PM »
Instead of always playing on my laptop I want to try installing Sims on the poor abandoned PC in the house (Everyone has laptops so it doesn't get used much any more). The problem is the PC. It doesn't have a DVD drive, just a CD drive and all my games are on DVD.  Can I copy the games from my laptop onto a CD so I can try playing on the PC?  I really don't want to go out and buy an external DVD drive because I don't know if I'll like playing on the PC.

I think it is possible to convert DVD into a CD with the appropriate software, but it definitely will cost money and some searching to find a CD that holds 5GB+. :P
Well, that's your opinion, isn't it? And I'm not about to waste my time trying to change it. - Lady GaGa

Short answer: No.

There's no reason to even try doing this because of Disk Authentication. You need the original disk in the drive to play and a copy isn't going to work, that's the whole point of Disk Authentication, yes? Otherwise you could just make a ton of copies and sell them or whatever.

How about getting a digital copy from Origin and installing that on the PC?

Well I belive it is possible to get the Original DVD image using MagicISO, and then using Demon Tools to run it throught a virtual DVD drive, I'm sure it is pretty much Ligit, if you need more accurate explanations Contact me via PM

This doesn't even take in to account the fact that the Sims 3 is an extremely high-end game.  If it's old enough to not have a DVD drive, are you sure that it even has the minimum specs to run the game even if you could do what you wanted to?

But PJSim is correct:  if it does meet the specs, digital download is your best bet.  From what I understand you can use the keys from your original DVD software to receive a digital download of the game, which won't require the use of discs at all.

The reason I just asked for general info is that this is for TS2. I have some in digital and some in DVD and I didn't want to buy the discs again in digital.

The TS2 site is still down for maintenance so I didn't know where else to ask.

Come to think of it why not have one thread for the people who still play TS2?

I think you should be able to get a digital version of your TS2 games by activating them here:

I tried that with mine, and it didn't work.  I believe that only works with recent games, and TS2 is not recent enough.

Hmm, well according to Origin Help you should be able to:

Quote
If you have an older game title, such as The Sims 2, Spore, or any other titles released before 2008, you may need to redeem the code through this website:  https://activate.ea.com/activategame.do

Login with your EA account
Enter the code in the box above.
Click Sign In to redeem the code.
It may ask you to link or create a new persona. If the code is still coming up invalid, please email, chat, or call in to support and we can assist you further.
Note: You may need to go back to options and click on "Refresh My Games" before the game will show up in Origin. If this does not make the game show in your "My Games" section, please log out and log back in to Origin.

I used it recently to activate Generations and I found out you need to type in the code exactly as it is on the manual; that is you need to use CAPITAL letters; like this: A1B2-C3D4-E5F6-G7H8.

Note: The link (quoted from Origin) doesn't work, it's like this now: https://activate.ea.com/applyentitlement.do
