Clicking On Basement Tool Crashes Game
« on: February 12, 2010, 08:39:36 PM »
This just started happening a couple of hours ago. When I go into build mode and click on the basement tool, the game crashes to my desktop. It's done it four times in a row. If anyone has experienced this, I'd like to hear. I haven't tried restarting my computer yet, but it that works, I'll update.

I mentioned this before in another topic. I thought EA would have fixed this in the latest patch, unfortunately I still have the problem... I have the same: I click on the basement tool and my game crashes to my desktop. This is why I stopped with the Nectar Challenge for a while; I can't build basements...

It's really very strange.  I've been building basements with no problem and then suddenly this started happening.  Have you been able to build basements at all since World Adventures came out?

Has this started happening since you last patched/updated your game?

It seems that whenever a patch comes out to fix something, it breaks something else.  :(

I've managed to build a basement since the latest patch came out, so maybe I've just been lucky.  It's certainly not a universal problem.

- Have you tried doing it on an empty lot?
- Is the house you're trying to add it to older than patch 1.7? (a house from the original game for example).
- Was the house, say, downloaded from the exchange?

Yes I did. I believe I have the problem after I downloaded the patch which enables you to buy stuff from the store while playing the game. I am not able to buy stuff in-game, my game crashes to desktop, just like when I press the basement tool button.

I tried this on a empty lot and I still had the problem.

I hope we can solve this so I can continue with the Nectar Making Challenge...

Actually my tool crashed once before.

But then I patched up and installed WA so I don't know what fixed it.

From what i know:

Trying to build a basement in a house made prior to the update that made stairs recolorable (and that hasn't been properly updated) causes crash.
Trying to build a basement on a house where the moveobjects cheat has been used to place things off the grid, with this being done prior to WA patch, can cause crash.

Other than that, i do not know what's causing it for you. Try it in different empty lots, if it happens elsewhere too, it means your previous lot was somehow bugged/corrupted.
Try moving your custom content elsewhere and cleaning up the caches to check if that's what is causing it (even if you don't use custom content, try the cache cleaning thing), if doing that fixes it, move back your custom content one by one until you find the culprit.. or not, in which case the fault was of corrupted cache files.
If that fails, try creating a new neighborhood and see if it still happens, if it doesn't, then your savegame got corrupted somehow.
If that ALSO fails, try doing a game reinstall/repatch.

I believe this is the culprit in my case.  Thanks for the info.
