How to see if Images are copyright free?

How does one see if an image is copyright/royalty free? I have found a pattern I would like to use in CaP, but I don't know if it is Copyright free.

Assume that they are all copyrighted, unless you can get written notice from the creator of the work, that he has allowed it to be used without license.

If you find a photo, and can locate the owner, contact them, and see if they will allow a limited use license, for a specific purpose. As long as you dont sell it, you might be allowed to use it, if you give proper credit to the creator of the piece.

Hmm, that's a good one.
Do you still remember where you've found it? You coul ask your question there if possible.
Though, if you really want to use it you could perhaps tell it there that you have found the image from the place you've found it or at least not that you didn't made it.
I can not give you a clear answer on using it or not using it, sorry. Perhaps it's better not using it if you're not sure if it's copyrighted.
But royalty? Naaa, that's rediculous! As long as EA didn't made it nobody has the right to ask money for something they have made with a Sims program.

I think that if there is a source with the image, than it is definitely copyrighted.

No, I'm not. But I've copyrighted Max nontheless by having him written books with this forum in the title before I've posted him.
So even if anyone is trying to be smart to change his skin colour, hair, clothes, name and even his sexe than I still can easily find out who he (or she) was originally.

But I will await Carl's answer too, as I find this a very interesting topic.

If you are really worried about it, you contact the owner like others suggested. I think for the most part incorporating something into The Sims 3 is art and a form of expressing a fondness for something. No reasonable person would approach you so long as it's not used for commercial purposes. Here, it isn't.
