Fog Emitter Thread
« on: August 05, 2011, 12:06:26 AM »
I haven`t noticed many people here mentioning that they use fog emitter effects, so I thought that there should be one thread for all fog emitter questions. I hope others will be encouraged to use it, it`s a really brilliant building tool. I have the first two questions, thus far, I`ve only used the emitter for weather effects, so, are all other effects purely visual as well? I want to make sure because I have plans to build a dungeon and I`d like the fire to be the non lethal kind. I want to know if this is also true of food items and rats created through the fog emitter. Thanks. ;)

Leto had started a thread about triggering animations.  Here is the link.  There is also a link in the thread to Sims Wiki that has a list to all the commands that the fog emitter has.  I have never played with the fog emitter.  I may be ambitious and one day make a shark tank.

From what I know all effects are just visual.  As for fire, does the FX machine that came with LN have a fire option?  I think it does, you could always use that for non-fatal fire.  The only fog emitter command I can think of for fire is the fireplace.  Though there should be something that has a bigger fire.

I don`t need the codes, I just need to know their functionality. Thanks for the link though!

I have never found exactly what all the commands do.  Hopefully someone on here knows some. :)

For explosion and fire effects check this link (It's youtube link, I belive it is safe to link it).

Simple command "fire" will give you high flame that is not effecting Sims. Gobias Cofi not only didn't react to fire, but he walk trough it without second thought, so I believe it is just a visual effect.

As for other effects, there are rats and many other, from train in France to water jets in science facility fountain. I mostly use water effects, and am not familiar with fire that much, but in combination with gas effects you can make what every you can think of in that dungeon.

Yes, indeed. Those effects (both fog emitter and FX machine) are all visual-only. The only significant difference between the FX machine and the emitter is that the former doesn't require the use of cheats (to get fog emitter, you need to enable buydebug, therefore open the cheat panel), but it has a small variety of effects than the emitter and Sims react to it as an object, whilst the emitter is completely invisible (except the visual effects of course) in Live Mode.
Well, that's your opinion, isn't it? And I'm not about to waste my time trying to change it. - Lady GaGa

I haven't messed any on setting triggers for items. I was wondering if there is a trigger you can set for the fog emitter to have it turn on at night and turn back off at daylight. So it would be on from 6:00pm to 6:00am.
I was wanting to make a moat that's foggy during the night but not during the day.

Unfortunally it is not possible jet. There are "short-time" effects (like rats and birds) and constant effects like fog or this fire in pictures above.

Apparently there is a possibility to trigger the effect of fog emitters, so you should be able to light the torch and have the effect visible while torch is in light. I'll look around for more info about this later, when I find time.

Thanks Anushka for the idea of linking it to a light. After some research on linking items and banging my on the key board in frustration it got me closer to what I was wanting. I don't why but I have a hard time wrapping my head around the process of linking stuff together.
The light comes on at dusk and triggers the fog emitter then when the club closes and everyone leaves the lot and the light turns off and turns the fog off. So that at least gives me the fog during business hours of the club.

Some great info here, but one thing i cant find is how to actually activate a particular effect? I can see it in live mode or find options for it in buy/build mode? I know this is an oldish thread, let me know if there is a better place to post, Thanks.

Edit  Shift + Ctrl + Click to activate/use.

I'm just wondering if anyone could point out visual effects that would be helpful to a builder? Things like butterflies for gardens, etc? Because I don't really want to test every single effect out. ::)

Hey guys I'm taking an extended hiatus... again. I'm out of ideas to build houses and I don't have as much fun designing homes like I used to; it feels more like a chore. So that's where I'll be, I will probably be back sometime. :P

Reviving an old thread here.
I've been playing around with the fog emitter (my favourite new toy at the moment) and this is a water feature I made. You can just make out the water coming from the sun and going to the pool.

edit - a link to the photo is good lol

Anyone know of a fire effect that doesn't have smoke?

I tried to use the fog emitter to cause a fire effect under the space rocket of a build, but the smoke came up into the rooms above and didn't look good. I had to abandon the whole idea.  :-\
