Where are gems after being sent to get cut?

Sorry if this is a silly question, but I can't seem to find where my gems are after they are cut?  I send them off to be cut, but then what happens?

They come in the mail the next day.

Let's be difficult: it's not exactly the 'next day' you will receive your precious gems, it is the next shipping you will receive them. What this mans, and now comes the fun part, is even when you send your gems away at 8 am in the morning, you will receive them back one hour later, at 9 am; the next shipping.

If you have World Adventures your gems cut in a foreign country will be taken with your sims the moment they arive at home. So this means that if you send 10.000 gems away to be cut right before you go back home you will still have them cut in your sims inventory when you arive home: all 10.000 of them.

This part is too confusing.  Let me try.  You can send gems to be cut while your Sim is in another country just like you can when you're at home.  There's a mailbox attached to the Adventure Board.  You pick them up on the next delivery, also just like home.  But if you miss picking them up before your vacation ends, the returned gems will appear in your Sim's inventory and you'll get a message that your Sim picked up all the mail before leaving to come home.
