How mood affects Happiness Points
« on: February 11, 2010, 02:36:23 AM »
I decided to do an experiment about how the Sim's mood affect in Happiness Points.
The Setup
2 Indentical looking Sims : Alpha & Beta
Alpha: Over Emotional (To get high mood)
Beta: Perfectionist (Doesnt have any effect on mood)

Alpha will be inside the house while Beta will stay outside the house but still inside the lot for 1 week.
Before starting, I made Alpha go to bed to get that Well Rested Moodlet. After that I turn the best stereo for the Enjoying music Moodlet. Then turn on cheats and make the needs static. No wishes whatsoever were promised or fulfilled. Whatever points they have is what they gain from being in high mood itself.
But from Sun 0800 to 1300, Alpha got the New Stuff Moodlet so I decided to start the experiment at 1500 exactly.
At 1500, I calculated how much mood boost both of them got.

Alpha: 50 (Beautiful Decoration) + 50 (Having a Blast) + 25 (Well Rested) + 25 (Enjoying Music) + 12 (Squeaky Clean)
= 162 (More than enough to fill the bubble)
Beta: 50 (Beautiful Decoration) + 50 (Having a Blast) + 20 (Beautiful Vista) + 10 (Squeaky Clean)
=110 (Around halfway to fill the bubble

Then I recorded their current Happiness points at that time
Alpha: 410
Beta: 320

After that I just let the time pass at maximum speed ( To make me less bored waiting). I would pause at 1500 everyday to record their Happiness Points.

Alpha's points on the left, Beta's points on the right.
Day: Points (Difference from the day before)
Sunday:               410 (0) | 320 (0)
Monday:        1850 (1440) | 1358 (1038)
Tuesday:       3290 (1440) | 2395 (1037)
Wednesday:   4731 (1441) | 3432 (1037)
Thursday:      6170 (1439) | 4424 (992)
Friday:          7610 (1440) | 5309 (885)
Saturday:      9051 (1441) | 6195 (886)
Sunday:       10489 (1438) | 7080 (885)

Notice that after Thursday for Beta, he gets a reduction in point gain.
This is because that both of them gets a Stir Crazy Moodlet at Thursday 0800.

So from Sunday to Wednesday its 162 vs 110
Thursday to Sunday its 144 (162-18) vs 95 (110-15)
Alpha did not get a point gain penalty because at +144 mood, the bar is still full. Beta is around halfway filled after the mood hit.

So being over that line for mood can result in linear increase in point gain.
Specifically, % of the bubble filled x 1440 per day.
Feel free to ask any questions about the experiment.

Did you fulfill any wishes during your experiment? Because perfectionist receive pretty easy wishes, like doing the dishes.

I highlighted the part about not promising any wishes. Besides nothing came out except for the initial wishes that pop up from just moving in.

Thanks for posting the results of your experiment.  I imagine Carl and Metro will be interested in seeing this.

Nice experiment, jinhong91. It didn't show me anything I didn't already know from my own little experiments, but it's still nice to see a real breakdown in black and white. Well done.

So let me see if I understand correctly. As long as the bar is fully in the bubble (like, completely full), no matter how much extra there is, there won't be any difference? If this is true, then the fact that the OE trait isn't as useful as some of us thought it was (myself included) is further proved, as long as you can keep the bar full.

Incorrect. The more +to mood you have the faster you will gain happiness points.

Oh okay, I just thought since there was a 15 point drop, yet no difference in happiness point gain, it didn't make a difference.

It would be nice to know how much "in the bubble" both sims were at each of their 2 mood states.

Also, I'd suggest snob (supposed to double vista & decoration moodlet), grumpy (permanent - to mood), hates outdoors and loves outdoors to provide a higher variance on the moods for future tests.
Darkness and incomplete room moodlets can also be easily obtained.

Well, I'll be darned. I just did a little experiment of my own. Granted, it was a very short duration, but it still opened my eyes. I had always been under the impression that the higher the +to mood the faster the happiness points gained. Nope. There is definitely a threshold.

I created a Sim, and immediately sent him to the spa to receive the super deluxe vacation package. So, when he came back to his lot his total +to mood was:

Completely at Ease" +93
Having a Blast +50
Beautiful Vista +31
Squeaky Clean +12
One w/Nature +25

211 total. I let the clock run for 2 hours with him just standing on the lot doing nothing and he gained 60 happiness points in those two hours.

Then I started the game from the last save which was when he just got home from the spa. I added a nice stereo to the mix (+37 nice music) and some wall decorations (+31 Nicely Decorated) and let the game run for another two hours. Absolutely no difference in happiness points gained — it was still 60 despite the extra 68 +to mood he had for round two.

Alpha, before the mood hit already has enough mood to fill up the bubble.
Even after the mood hit, he still has a full bubble, so he gets roughly 1440 points per day.

(1440 HP/day) / (24 hrs/day) = 30 HP/hr, the same as Metro's little test run.  I think you've both conclusively proven the (same) capped rate of Happiness Points accumulation due to mood.  Excellent experiment!

So does it really matter how much above the bubble the mood bar really is?

I think so.  That's what Carl and Metro seem to believe and they're both excellent players.
