Hair for Sims
« on: February 10, 2010, 01:16:53 AM »
On the Exchange I see sims with amazing hair styles that dont exist in the game's template of choices. When I download these Sims the hair style does not come with... Whats the deal? Can you get download new hair styles w/o modding?

If it's not a hairstyle included in the base game, World Adventures, High End Loft, or a purchase from the Sims 3 Store, then it's a mod.  People will upload a Sim to the Exchange that has a mod hairstyle and if you don't have that same mod installed in your game, the Sim will have the default hairstyle that was used to create the mod.  And it bears repeating that we discourage the use of mods because of the harm they can cause your game.

Lack of hair styles is kind of a sore point for me.  Maybe my memory is faulty, but I seem to remember there being many more in Sims 2.  And I'm not spend lots of bux at the sim store to buy any.  *grumble*

I've never played anything except Sims 3, so I don't have that problem.  The hairstyles are fine with me.  But I do buy some from the store if I really like them.  Plus, new ones came out with World Adventures and High End Loft.

There were more hair styles in the Sims 2. I don't like the fact that there are less hair styles, even though you can customize the hair more.

Where all those hairstyles already there in the base Sims 2 game? Or the culmination of the whole series of expansion packs?

Honestly, what I do is I find households and download the household with the cool hair, because if you download the individual sim it won't work.
Thats how I ended up with the hair. :)

I don't think the original base game of the Sims 2 had any more hairstyles than we're currently offered--in fact, I think it may have had less, once you factor in the accessories section--especially since there was no easy customising, so you were stuck with the colours of ribbon/hats they offered you.  It's always a little frustrating to lose your favourites (I miss the wedding hair from the Celebrations stuffpack and the cute toddler-styles), but I was quite impressed with the starting selection for Sims 3.

I do wonder if they couldn't have just imported a lot of the Sims 2 styles into the base game, since they had the meshes already, and I can't imagine hair takes up that much space, but as I don't really know how it works and the differences in mechanics between Sims 2 & 3, I'll try not to dwell on it.

You can't really use the sims 2 meshes for sims 3, at least directly. The difference of quality is large.
Of course, all that is moot if the devs where smart and made extra high poly hair from the start and then reduced it for the game.

[Edit for unclear abbreviation.  -Pam]

What is OFC?

Of course. I had to look it up myself. Kind of odd to abbreviate 8 letters with 3 letters.

I thought it was a way to abbreviate "office".  But of course, that made no sense at all.

Anyways, I'm not trying to say that I thinks that Sims 3 is bad because of the hair choices, just that I wish it had been a bit better.  And yes, more are available if you pay in some manner.  Still, I don't think that everyone who plays the Sims is going to buy all the stuff available, simply for lack of interest or immediate funds.  Sure, the intial game is in my opinion worth the price tag.  And obviously so do many other people.  But many people are going to just be playing the basic game, and it seems a shame that that was limited in this way.

Thanks, Metro.  I'm going to edit the post.

I had never downloaded any mods or anything, but not really knowing too much about that sort of thing, I did try to download a sim.  Well, I did not get the sim since I didn't have a mod, but got the bits and pieces, ie...fingernail polish and makeup, I guess that is where I got the polish, I will not download anything again, but I love my fingernail polish, go figure....my sister hates me now, she wants fingernail polish too.  LOL

I haven't found too many sims I liked enough to download......plus I always get annoyed if I do download it and there is CC in it that someone neglected to mention when they uploaded it. The CAS system in TS3 is good enough, in my opinion, that I can make just about anything I want anyway.
Be careful with stuff from the exchange. The stuff that EA makes is fine (except for one male hair that I downloaded and has never, ever worked), but the user submitted content isn't always that great.
I am hoping that with future expansions we see more hairstyles. HELS has some decent hairstyles for women and some really nice ones for men, so if hair is important to you, you might want to buy a copy of it.
