I do wonder though, when the challenge comes, would I have to start a new game, and begin collecting anew? Otherwise, it would be unfair, since I'd be way ahead of everyone else with the massive collection I'm building up.

Oh, absolutely. Everyone starts all challenges with new characters created in CAS.

Wow....those are pretty gems. Did you collect them in Sims 3 or WA or ? I am new to Sims and have only played Sims 3. My gems all show up glowing white, except for the yellow ones.

That might be an issue with your graphics card being not quite enough for the game to run correctly.  All the gems are supposed to be different colors.  The only "white" ones are diamonds in the base Sims 3 game.
