New towns from the exchange
« on: February 09, 2010, 04:38:14 PM »
I'm getting bored with Sunset Valley and Riverview.
    1) Is there a way to actually add more lots to Sunset Valley?
    2) Have you guys seen any cool towns on the exchange? I can't seem to find any.

Thx

I don't know if these are in the exchange nor would i trust it for that, but there are two good towns over modthesims (and probably other sites), one of them being a recreation of pleasantview.

I'm assuming you mean the worlds that players can create?

Mod the Sims is a pretty famous website I guess you could say for adding and tweaking the games for both Sims 2 and Sims 3. there are some pretty cool mods in it, but also some that just plain suck. Also, you should use them at your own risk as mods respond differently to different computers and they could completely destroy your game(s). If you really want to know more, Google is your friend.

I think that as the year goes on, we'll find a lot more towns available for download as players get used to Create-a-World.  I recall from an interview that testing out a world for playability can take months, so it's still a little early for lots of choice.

By the same token, before downloading a third party town, it's probably a good idea to check out any possible reviews for it, so you don't settle in with your family and then discover that it's impossible to do X, Y or Z.  Obviously, it's also this forum's policy to recommend against any third party content, because you can't be sure what bugs it might introduce to your game.  But I would just be extra careful with towns, because none of the customisers and modders have experience with making those yet.

I suspect that because they've released Create-a-World, there won't be any more EA neighbourhoods to download... the effort that goes into building one is probably not worth it for them.  I kind of wish they'd configured the towns in World Adventures so that they could also be functional neighbourhoods, but sadly not.

MegTrog is right.  We discourage using mods and third party content.  There's another thread that discusses it more thoroughly.

In the particular case of worlds, IF the mod only contains the world in question, it is unlikely to break your game, tho a poorly made world may lack, for example, a fishing spot for death fish or a particular gem or building to photograph, the roads could look bad when seen from a distance or the houses too pricey for npc sims to move in (and thus, sim population could stagnate).
Another thing that *could* happen is the dreaded WA/CAW bug of sims getting pregnant and married with random npcs. If this happens to you, reload an earlier save. This is a known game bug that EA has yet to fix.

Just for the record so no one points a finger at me later, I did say in my previous post to "use them at your own risk" and I reiterate that they really can be harmful to your game.

I don't have the create-a-world beta. Just a quick question: is it any easy to use, and could a total computer illiterate use it?

In one of the other threads here, someone said that it's easier to get to grips with if you have some knowledge of Photoshop or a similar programme.

*Somewhat* easy. As in everything is point & clicky to do, but it has its assorted bugs, obscure things and woes.
