Gallery Working
« on: July 18, 2011, 12:40:19 PM »
I'm sorry for the lack of warning. I wanted to do this in 2012 but I need the scalability for The Sims 3 Pets expansion which is coming soon, so it happens now.  I can terminate my contract with the current host gracefully so we will begin transitioning to the new server I had planned for later. Since I've done a lot recently the process to execute a move is fresh in my mind. I will not start things immediately but you should expect some downtime. I did not think I would be doing this until next year but this move allows a lot more flexibility for me as far as price and power. For example, when the next expansion is released I can give the server a lot more juice to deal with the many incoming requests. When I don't need all that power, I can scale it back and save a bit. Either way, I am able to back up everything with just a single click which saves me a lot of time and protects us all the better. I apologize for any inconvenience but I'd rather get this over with. Everything should transition within 24 hours. When I'm done, you won't notice anything has changed. I will have to deal with little quirks like time etc. however as the server is not located in the same time zone. That is a low priority problem until the other stuff is done.

DO NOT UPLOAD ANY FILES TO THE GALLERY OR SWAP SHOP UNTIL THIS IS OVER AS I CANNOT GUARANTEE IT WILL BE THERE WHEN I AM DONE

Here is what you can expect:

Downtime: I'm afraid I can't predict just how long the server will be off. The trouble is that the current host has to forward all information to the new host and this information has to make its way to the internet --- so the web knows where we are located. I will lock things down about an hour before the move and then the move will begin. I will try to work as quickly as I can.

Images from the gallery will take time to upload. A LOT of time. I have to do this from my home machine so it will be a while before all images for stories etc. hosted from gallery will be visible.

Ditto for the attachments in the swap shop. I willl first do images then the attachments so these will be last to come.

The most crucial info on the forum is backed up already and on another server. Nothing can go horribly wrong with this move. The new locale of the files will be in another server on the cloud where the current info is stored.

I apologize in advance but I am not able to tell you exactly when it will begin. I'm sure you can imagine from my perspective that I just want to get it done as soon as I possibly can. I expect the move to begin sometime this afternoon and advance into the evening. The forum will be my first priority. The guide and other things can transition a little more smoothly and I have time to make that happen. My first priority is getting this board to its new home without a hitch. The guide is so much more simple and less likely to give me a problem.

THE FORUM WILL BE FOUND DIRECTLY OFF THE GUIDE SITE. It was set as it is in the past due to space and power constraints. Now we have enough power to put everything in one neat package. There is no need for another domain. When I am done with that you will find the forum at carls-sims-3-guide.com/forum/ and it will automatically forward any address to its proper spot. So most of you will not even notice -- there's not even a need to change your bookmarks.

Wow. :o

So that means we won't have access to the forum for more than one whole day? Still a good thing, though. :)

I'm being cautious. Just don't upload anything for now.  ;)
That's all I ask. I have to back it up and that will take a while, so if you disobey that and put it up you'll have to do it again yourself.

Oh, okay. I have an update ready for my story, so I guess I'll use Photobucket this time. :)

No need whatsoever to apologize, Carl!  You need to strike while the iron is hot.  Go for it!  Thanks for the update and many good wishes for a smooth transition.

Quick question: the afternoon in what time zone? Yours? Like, chronic, I have an update for my story ready, but I guess I'll just wait until tomorrow.

I am waiting on a server to update for a test run... I put my carlsguides.com site on the new server. For now it doesn't resolve to http://www.carlsguides.com but you can see it working at http://50.57.114.252 When that resolves correctly and goes to the right box I will know the forum is ready for the move.. gotta love old sites as guinea pigs :P

Edit eh well at first that was useless. What I decided to do instead is nuke the index page off the old server... so when going to carlsguides.com shows you the right page then that move has been completed. This is to give me an idea how long we'll have to wait.

I've initiated the transfer so we'll go offline abruptly. I expect something weird to happen when the forum goes live on the other server. I'l have to make some configuration changes telling it where it is.

Never bumped my own post -- it's important this is on the latest post in announcements.

The move to the server I've nicknamed Serenity is going very nicely but is time consuming. Some of you can imagine how brutal it is to upload 1.5gb of data to a server with poor DSL.  >:(

carlsguides.com still has not switched to the new server and I expect the forum to follow about an hour and a half later. Unfortunately for me I can't sleep until this one is done because I don't want to leave the forum/guide possibly broken for hours. We have far over 99% uptime and I'd like to keep it that way.

Well, thank you very much, both for the announcement and for all the hard work.

And yes, this is the most stable forum I've ever been on.  Thank you. :)

I didn't catch this until things were being transferred. I thought there was a serious problem with the site, so I emailed you. I apologize for doing so, but at the time I didn't see anyway to check the forum and find out what was going on.

Glad to hear you will be getting all this freedom. and great work!

Carl, why don't you make this topic a temporary sticky so that it won't get buried in no time? :)

It's strange that I didn't get your email. Unfortunately I'm going to have a lot of glitches on a personal level as I try to set up my own mail account from the linux command line. Oh the joy...

I think i will be here so often updating that it can't be buried. Hopefully the heading at the top will clue people in. But, I sticked it anyway.
