Digital download vs Physical disk - related to WA bugs?
« on: July 08, 2011, 02:06:06 PM »
I recently installed The Sims 3 (plus some EP's and SP's) on a new computer using the digital download version of all the games. I just liked the idea of not needing a disk in the drive I guess. I downloaded and installed through Origin (the program formerly known as EA Download Manager) and patched whenever the installer told me to.

Everything went fine until I decided to send my Sim traveling, here is some of the fun I had with that:

After returning from vacation my Sim was cloned but different (one employed, one unemployed for instance); skills gained while on vacation had disappeared; things bought on vacation which goes in the family inventory (like the board breaker, nectar maker) were gone, things brought from home in family inventory also gone; number of ancient coins reset to zero; visa level dropped to where it was before traveling; vacation homes bought were no longer owned when my Sim returned.
I would complete adventure challenges like Historical Hoarder but later it would show in the journal as incomplete and I was unable to complete it again no matter how many relics I collected.
Sometimes I would send the Sim home from vacation and the Sim would leave alright but I would be stuck in the foreign location. I could move around with the cursor but there was no Sim icon and the panels at the bottom of the screen where all blank. All I could do was exit the game.
I got opportunities to travel, for example "Go to Egypt and talk to three locals" or some such. When my Sim got to Egypt the opportunity had disappeared, or I completed the opportunity in Egypt to where it says "Go home to complete opportunity" but when I got home it still said "Go to Egypt" as if the trip never happened. And so on...

I tried all kinds of things: going back to an earlier save, deleting all savegames and caches, starting over a new game with a new Sim, re-downloading and reinstalling everything; nothing worked. I never managed to have one problem free vacation trip, one or more of the above would always happen.

...

Just before giving up in disgust I finally remembered how much I dislike the DRM that comes with downloads anyway. I then uninstalled everything and reinstalled using my physical game disks. After that I have had none of the above mentioned problems once. Just... no problems!

So, my experience in short:
I install from digital download -> WA is virtually unplayable except for looking at pretty scenery.
I install from physical disks -> WA works perfectly.

Well, I don't really know what this means or how relevant it is to the problems others have with World Adventures. Has anyone else had occasion to compare a download install to a physical install? Comments...?

I've never downloaded a game. I buy the disk because if I have to reinstall, I think it's safer (I'm ole fashioned). However, I know people who haven't had a problem with their downloads.

Sorry wish I could help.

Some of these problems are known to be generic bugs - the first four, for instance.

You bought the digital download and the hard copy? Or do you get the digital for free if you have the hard copy? I just use a disk so I don't know if the bugs are related to the digital download.

I have the physical discs for all the expansions I have and I can say with all certainty that my WA does not work perfectly lol.

A lot of these bugs are sporadic and don't happen every time.  And I believe that the disappearing skills/items is a result of the patch released after Generations.

I bought everything as hard copy, always do. Then you can use the serial numbers from your disks in Origin to get a free digital copy. I was happy about that as I like to have backups of everything but now I've had all these problems with it I'm less happy. :P

Good point, poor choice of words on my part. Nothing in Sims ever seems to work perfectly, heh heh. I do have the excavation bug and the photography bug, occasional weird pathing issues, weird adventure board, maybe more I've yet to come across.

But the problems I've described are all to do with the game not saving correctly when switching between travel locations and that pretty much breaks your gaming experience completely.
With the download install it happened every single trip and I tried a lot of different ways (putting something in family inventory, not putting something in family inventory, Sim being a celeb, Sim not knowing anybody, not using the adventure board, etc.). Something always went wrong with the save.
Since switching to disks it hasn't happened once and I've been zipping back and forth quite a lot. Well, we shall see what happens as I keep playing but it seems like more than coincidence to me. I always preferred disks anyway...

Do you mean these issues have been around since WA came out? I just never encountered any of this when I used to play WA ages ago.

Well, as Hosfac mentioned, disappearing skills and items came in the recent patch, I believe. Also, with the cloning, that's happened previously - though sometimes TS3 has so many bugs, it's hard to tell if you're getting a bug confused with another. Long story short, I'm not 100% sure that the last bug is part of the "Travelling Nightmare", or a bug that has no specific cause, and is linked to no specific location change.

Unfortunately very true. And it probably gets more confusing with every new EP, more different combinations, more patches on top of patches...

I can say that this is very, I repeat very random with each save file and family. I had little to no bugs and glitches before I got LN. Then it all started. All the horror. Sims resetting, no skill gain, etc. etc., I could go on. I had to restart my legacy because of these. Most patches don't make the game better, they make it worse. Instead of fixing bugs, they create new ones. Well, except of a few from Ambitions period. I have to agree with PJ, however. When I played WA around the start of 2010, I had no (and it is a firm no) bugs. Absolutely none. Now I always save before traveling. Dangerous.
Well, that's your opinion, isn't it? And I'm not about to waste my time trying to change it. - Lady GaGa

Do you mean these issues have been around since WA came out? I just never encountered any of this when I used to play WA ages ago.

Excavation was broken with the second WA patch (back when they released more than one patch per expansion) and was never fixed for some reason.  All I know is that it worked when I first got it.  The photography bug and lost skills/disappearing items came around after the Generations patch (it's odd how many bugs have been caused by patches as opposed to the ones fixed by them, no?  :P ).  And there have always been pathing issues as evident by random sims ending up trapped in the mountains.  However, I believe that the adventure board issue is caused by our friend Grimmy.  It always seems to start happening around the time that sims start dying, and if you leave and return, the problem occasionally fixes itself.  Unfortunately, any time I think I have this confirmed, the game does something to lead me to believe otherwise.

So a lot of these problems were there to start with, and a lot of them came later.

Well, more than 2 weeks now and none of my earlier problems have resurfaced.
I've had one weird family inventory glitch, I suspect celebrities are responsible. I've had several Sims in several savegames travel back and forth with no problems; then I sent two 3-star celebs to Egypt. They left Sunset Valley with nothing in family inventory, while in Egypt they bought a treasure chest and they both got one of those random celeb freebies; one got a stove, the other got a couch.
So, after returning from Egypt there should be 3 things in family inventory: 1 treasure chest, 1 stove, 1 couch.
None of those things were there, instead I found: 3 random paintings, 1 microwave, 1 alarm clock and 1 giant fountain. ???
That doesn't even make sense... *sigh*
This is so hard to avoid, celebrity is not exactly exclusive in Sim world. It spreads from Sim to Sim like a contagion and the only way to avoid it is to quarantine your Sims in their home. Pretend you're playing Sims 1, basically. :P

Hmm, not that Grimmy isn't a suspicious character, but I'm getting the problem almost right away, day 1 or 2. Sims will check for adventures and find nothing although making them try again (on the same day) eventually brings something up.

I'm starting to suspect entire adventure chains have gone missing; there's one in particular I'm fairly certain about. It's the one in China that will teach your Sim martial arts - according to Carl's guide the adventure that should start it off is called "Potent Signs of Potential". I remember this one from way back, Sims are supposed to be able to get that very early on with visa level 0.
Well, I simply cannot get that to roll and I have been looking for it. However, if I take my Sim to martial arts level 1 I will get the next stage of that chain right away (spar 2 times with local Sim -> meditate for 2 hours at Scholars Garden and so on).
Now, this worries me. What if those "empty" adventures on the board are like placeholders for adventures that can no longer be triggered? This particular adventure I can trigger myself by teaching the Sim martial arts, but what about ones where you need a key to access a tomb or something. :-\

it's odd how many bugs have been caused by patches as opposed to the ones fixed by them, no?  :P

It's getting depressing, especially when they don't get fixed again. That excavation bug is now a year old, far as I can tell. :-\
I'm considering rolling back my game to an earlier patch level. I just need to decide which one will give me the most features I enjoy with the fewest problems.
