Gardening Career and the Omni Plant
« on: July 07, 2011, 10:42:00 PM »
Hi,
I am starting to play a dynasty, and have chosen Gardening as a career.  I have finally finished the tasks to get the omni plant, but what should I feed it so that it counts towards money earned for the career?  I know that the money trees don't count, which is pretty annoying.
What should I feed it to make the most profits?

Thanks!

From Carl's Guide:

"...make tons of money duplicating things like death fish, high value skill books, and anything else your heart desires."

I'm not completely sure that your harvest would count towards the career, as I have practically zero experience with the Omni plant.  Still, you could make a boatload of money by feeding it very expensive things.  :D

For the Career promotions, the only things that count are normal harvestables. Essentially, anything that will count towards it is a complete waste of an Omni plant.

Just as a note, be sure that you offload all of your harvestables (other than any you plan to use of course) at the Consignment shop (assuming you have it available). The higher returns from selling there do count and will get you to level 10 faster than selling at the grocery store or direct from inventory.

Strange thing, but my money trees HAVE counted towards the gardener career. In fact, I managed to get from level 9 to 10 exclusively on money bags. Is this just an awesome glitch? As far as other harvestables, I think Life Fruit sells for the highest. It sells for $100 at perfect quality. But you don't need an omni plant for it, so that's kind of useless. I usually use omni plants for fertilizer. Feed it some sort of excellent or higher fish, and then when you harvest it and fertilize a plant with it, you're almost guaranteed a perfect harvest from that. I like to sell my Life Fruit instead of using it as fertilizer, so the omni plant fish is a good alternative for me.

I ended up trying one of the expensive fishing books and they counted for career experience! It really helped me get from level 9 to 10. You can't sell them at the consignment store, but at around 1600 each it didn't really matter. Steaks and life fruits are the next best harvestables I would think...

While I don't recall exactly how much fishing books are worth, but some of the novels you buy in foreign countries are worth over $2,000.

The top end fishing book is costs 2000, but I suppose that is what you get with a perfect plant.  As this sim is first generation of an immortal dynasty, he is unable to travel yet.  So the fishing book was the most expensive from the SV bookstore.  I am about to take them traveling and stock up on some expensive books to feed the omni plant when they get back.

The quality of the omni plant doesn't matter.  The quality of the item used (if it has one, like fish do) determines the output of the plant.  The best quality of omni plant I've had in one of my games is very nice, and I've harvested outstanding and perfect vampirefish from them.  Since books don't have a quality, they always sell for what their resale value is.  If you sell them at the consignment store, your reputation will determine that.

I found that if you feed the omni plant at the science facility in sunset valley, then the harvestables do count towards your gardening career.

On the topic of Omni plant, if you manage to get a book from the past or future, they can be worth quite a bit as well.  This requires someone to have invented or bought a time machine of course.

My money bags have always counted for my career. I can guarantee it's very difficult to get to level 10 of that career without money trees. Of course, I've never grown books on an omni plant for my career so it may be possible that way too.

When I didn't realize that you could sell the money bags to have them count (I cashed them in instead) I was able to make lots of money with omni plants and selling the book about Atlantis (I can't remember exactly what it was called, but I got it from the book club, and you can also get it in the time machine).  It reproduced around $2k per book.
