A Re-Colouring Question

This is going to make me sound so clueless and pathetic, but I need help, so I'm going to ask for it and deal with my stupidness.

I know how to recolour clothes, and have been doing so for ages. I just can't recolour furniture! It's so annoying, I downloaded some lovely patterns and now I can't use them.
So what I'm asking is, how do you recolour furniture? Thanks a lot, in advance.

When you go into buy mode there's a button called Create a Style. it's beside the hand tool. Click it and then click on the piece of furniture.

Don't feel bad. It took me forever to figure out how to color the different sections.

No kidding!  When the game first came out, for the longest time I thought "This create-a-style tool isn't very versatile at all!"  Then I got a clue.
