Lady Ravendancer Goth's Book o' Spells

"This suspicious tome is chalk full of discount charms and hexes! Curse your neighbors, enchant your shoes! Guaranteed to never leave a whisper of glitter, this book will strike fear and mirth into your friends."

This can be bought separately or as part of the Gothic Library set. So if you want the whole set, do not buy it separately like I did.

http://store.thesims3.com/productDetail.html?productId=OFB-SIM3:37838&categoryId=&scategoryId=13062&pcategoryId=&ppcategoryId=&gender=female&startAt=0

I bought the item (500 sim points) and tested it in game. The item costs 75,000 simoleons to buy in game, so you will need a rich sim to play with it. The Book o' Spells adds the following interactions when you click on it:

Learn Spell
And once you learn a spell you can:
Review Spell (Reviewing a spell lessens the chance that the spell will backfire or fizzle).

Spells that can be learned are:
Summon - This will summon a random sim from your town.
Summon Aquainted - Will summon a sim that you are acquainted with.
Enchant - Will enchant your spell book giving it sound and animation.
Mood Elevatus - Similar to the "Brighten Day" ability of sims with the "good" trait.
Unleash Animate - Use in a room of unsuspecting sims to curse and make them act like animals.

The spell book can only be used by teens or older. Children cannot use it.  Using the spellbook and casting a successful spell will grant the "Making Magic" moodlet (+15 mood).
A failed spell can curse your sim and give the "Cursed" moodlet (-50 mood) and can cause your sim to have a sudden need to visit the bathroom, take a shower or act like an animal.

Once your sim learns a spell you can click on the sim to get the option to cast spell. The spell descriptions are done in rhyme and the notifications that you receive regarding the learned spells are also in rhyme, which I thought was a nice touch. It's a good idea to review the spells several times to improve the chances of casting it correctly.

Studying a spell from the book:

Casting the "Summon" spell:

Enchanting the spellbook:

Effects of the "Unleash Animate" spell on Roxie Lin (she began to clean herself with her "paws" like a cat and then growled)

It may be possible to enchant other items, but I did not test that. It would be interesting if casting spells will unlock other spells, but I only played with it for about 30 minutes. The best part of this item is being able to summon that pesky love interest instantly whether they like it or not. No more dodging invitations to come over or go out. Bwahaha!

I love it! Hopefully this is not a way of EA to avoid making a magic expansion, but just a teaser of it.

I feel so jealous.  :( That looks great I would love to do it. So how much is 500 Sim points? Just to see, you know. I can find a way.

Wow, I just found out that the spell book is part of a new EA Store set:

EA is going to make me spend more money! Gah! 1,200 for the set.

$10 will buy you 1,000 sim points. $20 for 2,000.

This is utterly awesome!  I'm glad I still had a few SimPoints saved up!

At first this sounds cool, but those spells aren't very interesting to me - there just aren't enough of them. Please keep playing it Laurencius and see if you discover more spells. I also hope this is not a way to get out of a magic expansion. I also hope this is not a limited edition item.

Thanks for the picture of the library. I was torn between the set and just the book until seeing them. This premium content venture is very interesting. This set looks amazing and will fit with a story I wish to write. I wonder what else they will expand it with?

I agree with you pallyndrome. It sounded awesome the first ten seconds, but then I realized that there were only five spells and that these weren't so great. For instance, the "Enchant" spell will only work on the spellbook; it would be cooler if other objects could be enchanted (and it is not hard to do, there are already animations for ghost haunting household items).

I also disliked the fact that Spellcasting is not a skill and you cannot receive rewards or keep track of your progress and spells in the journal. Also I've heard that children animations are not included, so you may end up with stretchy children if you cast spells on them. :(

This was a good idea, but it could have been (a lot) better. I just hope they add magic in a later EP, like they did with Apartment Life.

It seems to me that EA tends to tease us with content. If you've noticed they do things like put pirate content in the store and then released Barnacle Bay, then they put a lot of items for children in the store and then released Generations.  I'm going to speculate that this content is another teaser and there will be more "magic" coming.

I agree but RunAmokSims.    I can't keep buying EPs and SPs forever,  ;D but for now I will. I am working my way to getting 1000 simpoins this week.

This sounds cool and a bit unfair at the same time. Unfair because some people don't have enough simpoints. But still, glad to see magic return. :)
