Yeah painting is defintily the easiest one of the two.

Well if the queen of dynasties herself says it, it must be true.  ;D

What's easier to supermax and get to the top of the self employment career, painting or sculpting?

Painting is easier, but sculpting isn't hard either.  If you're planning to include sculptures as part of your Dynasty museum, I think it's best to assign that job to an Immortal as early as possible, just so that you don't have to keep training people to make non-melting ice sculptures.  I had sculpting as the Gen 2 supermax and career in my Clan Douglas Dynasty, and had no problems.  I left painting for Generation 4 because it was easy enough to assign the paintings to spouses in the earlier generations.

I was actually asking for an entirely different reason. I have an idea that will make my dynasty totally unique. Thanks! I'm not worried about the museums value.

I agree with Schip for dynasty purposes get an imortal scultping as soon as possible. Plus if you want more valuble portraits have spouses or spares do them as much as possible. I had a generation three painter who hardly did any of the portraits as gen two spare did them and after that gen five spare did a few. My official painter only did the portraits towards the end of the challenge.

Like I said, I'm not worried about the museum's value, I just want to finish. Thanks for all the help about the supermaxing skills! Unfortunately, I might have just failed my dynasty for the dumbest reason ever.

My biggest tip when it comes to supermaxing a skill is to start working on it as soon as your Sim is able.
Painting:Read the toddler all the painting books they will start at level three painting as a child.
Inventing:Can be worked on as a child.
Sculpting:Not able to work on till teen years.
Writing:Can be started as a child.
Logic:Have toddlers use the peg box.
Handiness:Have children play with the blocks to build handiness.
Music:Have toddlers use the xylophone.
Cooking:Have the child play with the toy oven.
Fishing:Can be started as a child.

My brain has stopped working now.

Rachel

Also worth mentioning the toddler books for writing.  The three level boost can be useful.

Also, being in Scouts in elementary school can provide a head-start on gardening - my sim didn't get the skill as a child, but started at level 3 as a teen.

So, how hard is guitar to super-max? I mean, putting aside the confusing language of that one challenge... Hard? Because I see a fair number of folks do it for dynasties, and am contemplating doing so for mine.

I wouldn't say it's "difficult" at all.  I *would* say it'll tax your patience to the nth degree.  That's because the Guitar Star skill challenge relies heavily on luck.

For those not familiar with this challenge, the skill book says you must perform at 10 venues or parties.  What the challenge actually requires is that you accept and complete 10 Skill Opportunities that take place at parties or venues.  In other words, you must wait for those phone calls, hope they are Guitar Star Opps (that's the luck factor) and if so, complete those Opps.

To make things a bit fuzzier, the game does not provide any tracking for your progress (2/10, 3/10 etc.).  Unless you keep track manually, you won't know how well (or poorly) you're doing until you get the Congratulations notification.

You can stack the deck a* little* by keeping the Skill Opportunities slot open and by minimizing the number of other skills your Sim learns.  Your best bet would be to have no other skills and to reject every Skill Opportunity that cannot be completed immediately so as to keep the slot open.  If the only skill you have is guitar, 100% of the skill opps you'll receive will be Guitar opps.  That's not to say all of them will be Venue opps but the chances are better.  The moment you start other skills, your chances of getting Guitar Skill Opps (and thus Venue opps) decreases because you've now diluted the pool with other types of skill opps.

As I said, it's not particularly difficult.  It requires no special gameplay skill, but in trying to complete that challenge you may need to pass up other things.  I suppose it's a matter of what is more important to you.

Thanks. I'm trying to plan a back-up in case my dynasty file gets WA troubles, thus making my plan to SuperMax Martial Arts unfeasable. I have a few things in mind.

Since martial arts rasies the athletic skill, you could just do athletic instead of martial arts for that sim if you have travelling problems. Unless of course you already have someone supermaxing that.

And thanks for the great description for the guitar star challenge SPY. For supermaxing I prefer to do skills that I have more control over, like not having to worry about getting enough random opportunities.

True, but I've been wanting to keep Athletics open to give my sims more activity options. It's really frustrating how many fun things (playing catch, for example, or hopscotch, or swimming) raises athletics. I think my current plan is to have fishing as that sim's back-up, especially since it can be worked on when she's a child so I can go as close to the line with it as possible, and not worry about guitar at all.

Ok, generation 6 in my dynasty is going to Supermax inventing and max the career as well. I expected maxing the career to be more difficult than it turned out to be, 3 days away from her Young Adult birthday my inventor has already maxed out her career and also completed two out of five challanges. I did however send her on a 15 day working vacation to Egypt, next time she goes there the locals are going to hate her :D

There is a little trick with blowing objects challenge - you can use moveobjects on in dynasty, so place 10 chairs (or whatever objects you want) on top of each other, and repeat on 3 more squares around. Then when you blow up one chair, it will blow up at least 6-8 more at the same time - and count it. Also, in build mode you can drag scrap from ground into household inventory and save time for your Sim so they have clear path to repeat the process and to collect them fast.
But inventing is really time consuming, and I would much rather chose almost anything else. Only skill I never supermaxed is photography, not because of collections - that is doable, but because of taking pictures of so many strangers.
My favorites are cooking, mixology, martial arts and nectar making, and sculpting. Painting and writing are easy, while fishing is time consuming for me too - to catch 350 fish! Gardening is a hazard without traveling so I wouldn't advice it if you're not really lucky with opportunities. I had gardeners meeting Grim before getting those steaks to plant :(

Handiness is great with Schipperke's trick of keeping all the broken objects in household inventory until your heir is ready to fix them.

Think that if you want to supermax gardening first, than you really need to get the second gen born fast and then hope your sim doesn't get invisible while your in France or whatever.

Wow that's really smart trick. I never would have bought about that.
