I think that reading any type of book, including recipes, increases happiness.  Nice side affect if you are skilling from books.

Not certain here, but I think gaining fun from books might only be a benefit to Bookworm Sims. I can't imagine that reading a Handiness book would provide fun but you never know. Maybe there's some nugget about unclogging a toilet that brings joy to some Sims.

Some skill books add fun and others don't.  I haven't yet determined which ones do which.  I don't think the Bookworm trait is required, though.  I used to think that any book increased fun because reading is always fun for Sims, but then I saw some skill books that don't.  So, I don't know for sure.

My Perfectly Happy sim, without bookworm trait, got lots of happiness from the recipe books, in fact she went from no happiness moodlet to 2hrs of 'having a blast' from reading one recipe.

But she was probably a Natural Cook, so anything to do with cooking probably increases fun anyways.

None of the 3 logic books add fun, at least to those sims without bookworm.

This was tested on the library, elated and not elated, with and without genious trait on young adult sims.

Why thank you. You're obviously a very astute observer of the human condition. Although I know a certain 14-year-old girl in my own house that would seriously question your accuracy. Oh, well. The apple might have fallen too far from the tree.

On the subject of handiness — I was just doing some testing for the upcoming handiness challenge (the one whose name seems to change every 5 minutes because of a new idea I have) and discovered something interesting: upgrades have a fixed amount of time. Did anyone else know this? I had always just assumed that a lvl 10 handiness Sim would upgrade something a lot faster than a lvl 3 handiness Sim. Nope. At least for the Self-Cleaning and Unbreakable upgrades, they're all fixed at right around exactly 4 Sim hours, no matter the skill level.

Yeah, it would appear that's the case. It's kind of like cooking. I guess meal time prep is also fixed, but you'd think that a lvl 10 cook would be able to prepare a meal faster than a lvl 1 cook. But, I know for a fact that's not true.

Metro, I could picture before myself how a handy sim could upgrade something faster than an amateur, but I've never thought that skilled cooks cook faster than unskilled ones. For example, how can you boil pasta quicker just because you know how to boil pasta? It still takes 8-11 minutes no matter what you do, the water can only boil, nothing more.

One of the challenges in the cooking journal makes meals prepared faster.  Maybe the one for preparing a certain number of meals.

Also, my current Sim had fun while reading a cookbook and she is neither a Natural Cook, nor a Bookworm.

It's not just about the actual cook time.  A highly experienced chef will be able to prepare a dish for cooking much faster than a novice who fumbles around the kitchen.

Well, yeah. That makes sense. But, if I give Emeril Lagasse a brand new recipe that he's never made and I try and make the same recipe, I'm pretty sure Emeril's going to not only do it quicker, but better. That's what I'm getting at.

Right, but that's only after key skill challenges have been accomplished.
