White Boxes on Lots
« on: January 21, 2010, 10:30:41 PM »
I was just adding a few houses to Riverview from the library and the first one I added was a house that I had downloaded. When I saw a white box on the lot, I wondered what it was and tried to first click on it with the clone tool so I'd see what it was. It couldn't be cloned. So I just tried to pick it up and I was able to pick it up and move it around, but it can not be deleted.

So I thought maybe it was a custom content item that was in the downloaded house, but that I didn't have. I went back to the library and placed one of EA's houses in the town and that one had SEVERAL of the white boxes! They seem to mostly appear at the bottom of stairs, but they can also appear pretty much anywhere in the house or on the lot. I placed about 4 more houses....all EA houses...and they ALL had the white boxes on them.

The white boxes seem to serve NO purpose at all....so what are they? The thing that stinks too is that you can't delete them. So if they are on the lot and you want to use that lot, you have to live with the white boxes I guess.  :(

Notice the message I get when I pick up the box. "SHOULD NOT APPEAR IN GAME."

That's very strange.  Does the white box show up when you're in live mode?

I'm not sure yet since I just placed the houses tonight and haven't moved anyone in yet. But I've never seen those white boxes before and I have placed houses. I probably haven't placed any houses in the town for a few weeks since I usually build them myself, but I don't recall ever seeing those boxes before.

I'll try to move someone in one of the houses and let you know.

Well I moved a family into one of the new houses I placed and it did not show the white boxes in live mode. They're still there in buy mode even with a family in the home....but at least they don't seem to be causing any issues with the sims being able to walk in certain places.

Wow, that would be annoying to see those white boxes everywhere!  :(
It could be 3rd party CC that replaces a EA object, that is one of the problems with 3rd party CC, since EA did not share meshes for their content this time out the 3rd party Creators had to figure a lot more things out to make items.  I don't quite understand the whole process, but sometimes instead of creating a "new" object for the game some Creators just used and EA item and it would replace EA's object with their own creation.  This is why I won't use 3rd party CC or download anything from the exchange.  :'(
I used to be a CC junkie when I played TS2.  8)  It seems this time out CC causes too many issues for the game.  >:(

If you use the testingcheatsenabled cheat and then the cheat buyDebug you are also able to build white boxes. Although I don't think this has to do anything with it, it might be useful information.

Would it work to delete them if you have "moveObjects on"? As far as I know, there's nothing you can't delete with that cheat.

No I tried that.

Igzi......this is an EA house with NO custom content in it. I've only downloaded a couple of houses and none from the Exchange....only from artists I know. But it seems in this situation, the EA houses have more of a problem with the white boxes than the non-EA houses do.

Hmm, well then I'm officially stunned...Maybe it's a bug on their computers since apparently the boxes "should not appear in game" and it also seems to affect the EA houses, right? If the wrong is on their side, then you maybe can't do anything.

2 posibilities:

1) insect/rock/misc spawner.

2) lot was created before EA patched the stairs to be recolorable, houses made pre-that tend to have such boxes around.

TG, it does look similar to the spawners, but it isn't one. Your second explanation could possibly be the answer. Apparently, these boxes have just showed up since the latest patch because I hadn't placed any houses from the library since before the patch, and when I was placing houses before, they didn't have the boxes.

If all the boxes are next to or very near stairs, then it's the stair thingy.

If they don't show up or interfere with live mode, I would just pile them all into a far corner of the map and check to see if they are still around after the next patch.  Or I guess you could try to recolor them and pretend they're Christmas presents!

I had this once. I downloaded a lot from another website, and this thing popped up by the staircase. I couldn't delete it, so I just moved it. It didn't show up in live mode and it didn't crash my game. It didn't seem to be harmful for me, but I don't know for sure.
