'Taken care of.' Lucy echoed. 'How?'

As if they had been waiting for their cue, Gabriel and Raphael entered the room.  Lucy wondered if they had been listening at the door, waiting for Michael to say his piece.  Her brothers were weird enough for anything.

She quirked an eyebrow at Michael but it was Raphael who answered.

'Michael rang me at work this morning to tell me he was considering letting you off.  I wasn't surprised,' He grinned. 'There's a soft heart in there somewhere.'

Lucy caught a look that passed between her brothers and a little voice in the back of her head whispered softly - You are not going to like this.

'I had just come out of theatre when he rang and I decided to take some air outside - clear my head before I did my rounds.  I started thinking about you and how you would want something pretty to wear and how Mr Stubborn here had left you very little time.'

'So,' He continued, grinning proudly, 'I came up with a good plan.  I rang both boys back and everyone agreed it was the answer.'

The voice in Lucy's head was louder - You are definitely not going to like this.

'I had some time before I had to start my rounds so I hopped on my motorbike and rode into Bridgeport.'

'Bridgeport?' Lucy felt a cold dread settle somewhere in the pit of her stomach.

'Yes, I knew there wouldn't have been much left in the shops here and that bike just eats up the distance like it is candy.'

'You actually rode to Bridgeport to buy me a dress?' The words felt thick in her mouth.  This should have been a joke but no-one was laughing.  Her brothers all had the same pleased as punch expression on their faces so she knew it was serious.

'The sales lady was very helpful.'  Raphael added, 'And cute.'

Lucy somehow forced a sickly smile while inside she felt all her former happiness swirl and whirl away, leeching out of her pores and leaving just a horrified disbelief behind.

'It's upstairs on your bed.  Why don't you go and try it on and we will wait down here for you.'

'Right.'  Lucy's feet felt as leaden as her heart as she climbed the stairs.

Raphael's world was IV lines and kidney dishes.  What would he know about buying dresses?

What did Raphael know about women?

The last time a woman had flirted with him.

He had stuck a hypodermic in her arm and then wondered why she'd run away.

The 'cute' sales lady was probably a nasty crone who was, even now, still rubbing her hands together in glee at having gotten rid of the left-over ugly from ten seasons ago.

She reached the top of the stairs and opened the door to her room.

Cliffhanger! Oh no!

So, I guess this update's lesson is...never flirt with Raphael!

It would be pink.  She knew it.  Raphael thought all girls liked pink.  She pulled a face at her wallpaper - pinky lilac with white dots.  He had chosen that.

It would be frilly and feminine with ribbons and flounces,

or, it would be long and daggy because he bought the wrong size.  The shoulder would slip off all night showing her bra strap and the skirt would flap around her knees.

She frowned at the tissue-wrapped parcel on her bed.

Andy would be so embarrassed at his date.  He would wish he had dumped her after all.  Tybalt and Dustin would be so pleased she turned them down.

Lilith.  Lilith would laugh so hard.

She crossed the room and reached a trembling hand out towards the package and paused.  For some reason a picture of her brothers popped into her head.

She could see them sitting on the lounge chair, beaming at each other and waiting for her squeals of delight as she unwrapped the dress.

She thought of them and a smile twitched at her lips.  They were such boofheads.

Gabriel, who had written a song about his dyed hair after she had played a silly prank and had given her the credit when it was a hit with the audience;

Raphael, who had ridden off to the city in his hospital scrubs to enter that most female of domains, a dress shop, just to buy her a gown for her high school prom;

and Michael.  Dear Michael, who tried so desperately to be a good parent and yet misread every one of her self-involved actions this week to reach the conclusion that she was growing into a 'very nice young woman'.

Well maybe she would just prove him right.  Maybe it was time she grew up a little.

She squared her shoulders, and took a deep breath. If those dear, ridiculous brothers of her's wanted her to be thrilled and delighted with whatever monstrosity was buried beneath that tissue paper, well she would act her little heart out and pretend it was the best dress she had ever seen.  Furthermore she would wear it with pride to the formal too.  Her head would be held so high that they might just crown her the prom queen to try to weigh it down a bit.

All the same, she just hoped it wasn't too ugly.

If the dress was ugly, I would stomp, cry, and smash. Skulls.

There was no squeal of joy, however, when she finally found the courage to tear off the tissue paper and reveal the contents.

Instead there was a stunned silence, followed soon after by a flood of tears.

But they were happy tears.  They were tears of surprise, delight and relief.

With trembling fingers Lucy touched the material.  Carefully she lifted the dress from her bed and just gazed at it.

It was beautiful.  It was the most beautiful dress she had ever seen.

She took off her day clothes and slipped the gown over her head and gasped at her reflection in the mirror.

She couldn't believe the stunning creature who gazed back at her.  It couldn't be her.  She looked so glamorous, so grown up.

Lucy dried her eyes and walked sedately down the stairs.  She was careful not to trip on the skirts.  It was only when she entered the lounge room and saw her brothers waiting for her that she let her emotions run riot again.

She drew all three into a group hug and the tears flowed again.

'It is the best dress ever,' she cried. 'I love it.  It's my favourite colour too.'

'I thought black was,' Raphael remarked drily.

'I like red now,' she grinned. 'Besides, I thought you would buy pink.'

'I think I know you a little better these days,' and they all shared a laugh together.

And so Lucy went to the prom.  Andy picked her up in a huge stretch limousine.

She felt just like a princess.

The evening was magical.  She and Andy were crowned Prom Queen and King.

She would remember this night for the rest of her life.
