Exception raised? -- Possible Fix
« on: June 06, 2011, 03:08:30 PM »
So while I am playing all the sudden the game comes out of fullscreen and gets a window for itself, and a notification comes up that says:"Exception raised error. Unhandled page fault on read access to 0x00000000 at address 0x100d84ba. Do you wish to debug it?"
It has happened to me twice and I have tried saying yes and no, both times closing down the game and not doing anything at all. It happened on a save file that I made pre-installing Generations. I use a mac. If anyone can help, please reply!!

I've not used a mac myself, but that error sounds like a RAM error. It could also be a virtual memory error too (if macs use virtual memory). If it is a virtual memory issue it would be a harddisk hardware fault.

So I recommend that you test your RAM first, then your harddisk.

Hm, I am not sure how to test my RAM, and I'm not sure if macs use virtual memory... :-\

This is not a Generations specific topic.  I am going to move this to the technical board for you. Sorry about your problem.

I also got this same error.  Never had this happen before until I installed the last patch and generations.  Checking either yes or no resulted in my computer crashing.
I haven't had any problems for quite some time now until this patch and Generations.

OK, I got it again, right after Andrea gave birth in my dynasty! luckily I saved before he popped out. I got a different message this time though:Unhandled page fault on write access to 0x00000039 at address 0x7432d628.
Do you wish to debug it ?

Do Macs have something like DEP (Data Execution Prevention)? How much free space do you have in your HD?

Is this happening with every file?  Also, have you tried starting a new file to see if it does the same thing?

I'm not sure, macs confuse me in a lot of cases. My family switched to them awhile ago, and personally I like Windows better, much easier to play games on! When I look, my computer says this about my memory: 2 GB 667 MHz DDR2 SDRAM

I'm pretty sure it is Pam. I haven't tried making a new file, but I don't think it will help. :P I will try tomorrow.

Indeed, page faults smell like RAM problem.

2 gb is the minimmum of RAM required for a MAC - here are the system requirements for LN, the last EP before Generations: link @EA customer support.

I think MACs behave a little bit better towards RAM than PC (or is it Steeve Jobs propaganda working like a charm on me?). I can give you the example of my PC. With 2 gb I had a lot of problems with the game, freezing, lagging, sometimes crashing to desktop. Yet, for a PC with Vista, 2 GB is above the 1.5 required. I've read somewhere that the real minimum of RAM should rather be 2.5 gb. And indeed, since I've upgraded to 4 gb, I hardly have any problem anymore.

To try with a brand new save is a good idea. Old games grow bigger everytime you play them, this means more data has to be loaded (in your RAM) while you play.

Do you have a lot of additional content installed (store items...)? If yes, you might also want to try without any additional content of any kind. The easiest way to do this is to let the game regenerate a new user's 'The Sims 3' folder. Rename your folder where you have your saves and downloaded content to something like 'The Sims3 - back up'. Start the game, a fresh folder will be recreated, containing no content, no saves, and with the options reset to default. Start a new game there and see if you have the same issues.

I'm using an iMac - New since September 4 GB memory and 500 Hard drive  I got the exception raised on read access error - do you wish to debug it -  when playing my original family in Bridgeport.  I moved them to Sunset Valley.  I played for a little while and the game froze a few times and had to force quit.

I did notice in my downloads folder that all the icons have changed, they are icons of a piece of paper with the corner folded.  They use to be sims icon.  I also just downloaded a new pattern in the SS to see what the icon looked like before installing it and that also looks like a piece of paper instead of the usual sims icon.

I did delete the 4 cache files and all the items in my DCbackup but still the freeze ups. I'll try when I get home from work to see if I get the same debug error message.

I'll try deleting my DCbackup, and the new file. I might ask my mom if I can upgrade to 4 GB, and I have looked at some good 4 GB dell computers, but that is mostly window shopping, my mom won't let me get a new one…  :'(

OK so I just finished playing yesterday and I had a stroke of luck, no debug error, and I was saving every once in awhile just in case. I took it slow at first, not doing anything too fast, and making sure to wait out lags before making commands. I also didn't play as long as I usually did. I don't know if it is getting better or it just overloads when I go to fast for my computer. Any Ideas?

EDIT: Fixed some of my grammar  ::)
