Graham (the producer from the Generations Live chat) tweeted a picture of the pet shop that you get as bonus when you pre-order pets.  Judging from the logo on the pet shop it looks like there may be birds.

I know this was a few pages back but, yes I am guessing that birds will be one of the new pets, and I have a feeling this is what they were talking about by "you just may discover something we haven't talked about yet "

I'd love to have birds, even though I really don't like birds as pets in real life.  I hope there's quite a bit of variety.  After all, even in TS2 the makers found a way to incorporate five types of pets (dog, cat, bird, rodent and fish).  Given how things from TS2 tend to expand in TS3, I've got my fingers crossed for maybe a pet skunk, or maybe fun pets to be found in vacation locations.  A baby panda!  *dies*

I feel pitty for birds in cages. They have wings, so they need to have the ability to fly. Even if it's only to fly in the living room of the petowner.
But in the sims 3 it could be awesome to start your own bird breeding program in your home voillaire. Next to the zoo you own.

Town/Lots

Although not yet confirmed, there is mention from the Sims 3 Pets Promo Page under the News Tab about a new world.
 
Each platform brings a new world for players to explore from the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 versions where players will unlock achievements by solving mysteries around town, the Nintendo 3DS with new lots to unlock to the PC/Mac version where they’ll be able to take their pets on play dates or meet other Sims at the dog park, cat jungles and even a horse ranch.
 
Now a “new world” can be interpreted in different ways, one being the game brings “a whole new light” for players (as far as interactions & gameplay go) or indeed a new neighborhood.  I’m hoping for the latter!
 
There is also mention from the Exclusive content that we will be able to change the look and feel of our town with the new Lot.

Players will be able to create their own Pet Shops as well.
