I think you're absolutely right, samoht.

The only chemist I've tried already had level 10 logic, so I'm wondering if a lower level of logic would mean they might have trouble discovering potions or make them badly or something.  Does anyone know if logic level affects the quality of their potion-making?

I've had a few Sims try their hand at the chemistry table. So far the best luck is with the genius trait and high logic. With other Sims it goes more slowly and they spend a lot of time getting singed and failing at each attempt. They can finally get there but it takes a lot longer.

My sim is a geniuis at level 8 of logic and so far has only discovered 3 potions. It takes a long time to discover a potion, and I have to stop her to up other skills for work.

There is a new lifetime reward that locks aging. Sounds like it's right up your alley!
