The doll is harmless if you just leave it in the Sim's inventory.  They'll pull it out and play with it as toddlers and children, but it's just a toy.  Even after mine turn into an IF, I put them back in inventory because they're just too annoying.

So far my IF has not been annoying, it just follows him around but it walks so slowly that Tris has finished in the bathroom and stuff by the time his IF catches up with him.

Oh, you're so lucky!  Mine always pester the child to the point of madness.  The IF interrupts anything the child is doing to chat or have a pillow fight.  I struggle to get the child to do anything if there's an IF nearby.  I haven't tried the "Leave Me Alone" interaction, though.  Maybe that would make a difference.

The Child argues with the IF, the IF then turns into a doll and sulks until the Child apologizes to it.

LOL I would so make my Sim-kids meanies in this case.

You don't have to be mean to do it, they just have a slight decrease in relationship. Also Pam, another way I have noticed is that when the Child goes to bed the IF turns back into a Doll, I then put the Doll in his Inventory and it is trapped there. I shouldn't really do this though, considering they will be getting married later on.  ;D

That's the biggest flaw of crazy inventors -- their IFs. I understand you, my friend, same thing with my fifth gen. Logic and IFs. :P

What is the difference between Sim Form and Toy Form after the IF is made real? (Besides appearance and walk)

As far as I know those are the only differences.

I tried that and kept getting a notice "Cari wants to come out and play". Then I saw my child was skipping school playing with the IF. Only choice was to delete it.

Hmmm. For something we can't help but get why are they so indestructable!  :-X I have other methods that might work but I do not have an IF to test them, I do have two IFs but I want to keep them and make them real.  :)

Has anyone tried the fire method of item and/or sim disposal for the dolls?

Hmm, interesting idea. But a tad bit brutal... I mean, the IF could grow into a really annoying Sim! :'(
