Tips for managing household ghosts
« on: January 16, 2010, 09:51:34 PM »
This is for a legacy family, but I suppose it's applicable to anybody playing through several generations on the one lot.  I've not had anybody in the household die yet, but it's going to happen, and while I expect having a couple of ghosts around is no big deal, having a dozen or so ghosts might be more awkward.

So what are the issues of having several ghosts around and how do you handle them?  Tell me your experiences!

Oh wow.  I have way too much experience with legacy ghosts!  Lol.  There have been posts about it already, but even I wouldn't be able to find them right now!

You have several options:

- Keep the grave on your lot and let the ghost roam freely.
- Let one of your Sims carry the grave in his inventory, which means the ghost never appears.
- Take the grave to the public cemetary and place it somewhere.  The ghost will haunt the cemetary, but nowhere else.
- Make a private family cemetary on a public lot and place the grave there.  Like the public cemetary, the ghost will only haunt that lot.

For my 12 generation Dreamweaver Legacy family, I chose the private family cemetary.  I put a fence, flowers, trees, and benches on the lot across from my family's house.  It's the one in Summerhill Court that has the pond for fishing.  Once I had put several graves there, it started showing up with a cemetary tag on the map view.  However, I believe you can also change the category of the lot from the Edit Town function.  It worked out nicely for me.  All the family throughout the generations was in one spot.  They came out often to haunt the cemetary, but never disturbed the living family.  And they were all right across the street if anyone wanted to go pay respects.  You can visit my blog to see some stories and pictures, if you want.  http://spoopssims3world.wordpress.com/category/legacy-family-challenge/

If you opt to keep the graves on your family lot and let the ghosts haunt, it could get annoying.  It does for me, anyway.  They take up bed space, eat food, break showers, and scare people.  Plus, it makes me sad.

I hope this is helpful for you.  Let us know how it goes for you!

How about building a small building with all the urns inside, and leaving no door letting them go outside. Will they still be able to get out?

If that is the case, you could easily have a bunch of ghosts still on your lot, but they couldn't get out and mess up your place.

I would be interested in hearing if they could go through walls.

With the latest patch, ghosts can go through walls and up/down floors without doors and stairs, respectively.

The ghost will haunt the cemetary, but nowhere else.

Actually, I have had some uncontrolled, dead (i.e. not even partially revived) ghosts taking a cab from the cemetary to their descendants' home and spend their night there, only to return to their grave in the morning as usual. So, unless it's a bug, they can most definitely haunt everywhere! ;D

A ghost in a cab? Can you imagine how much a photo of that would be worth?

Sorry I didn't bring my camera to that one, but it definitely happened!

Thanks for all the info.  I think Pam had a great idea in using the community lot across the street.  I can easily watch what my ghosts get up to without having the hassle of them being on the same lot.
