Why are there hearts coming out of the Pit of Judgment?

I'm trying to get the Doomsword hilt so I sent my Queen and Blacksmith into the pit. Nothing happened with my Queen so I sent my Blacksmith in, he died so I went to my last save and fed the beast. There are now ''woohoo'' hearts instead of fighting symbols coming out, and I don't even see the beast.

This. If you feed the beast enough, the beast will play with your Sim instead of fighting him. I believe this will also make it easier for you to get that hilt.

That happened to me, too, when I fed the beast a few times before jumping in.  I guess when you feed the beast, it loves you.

Don't trust it though.  It is a fickle beast.  Loves you one minute, tries to kill you the next.

No, not at all!  But the beast may consider your Sim a friend if he feeds it.
