How do you build an A-frame house roof?
« on: May 10, 2011, 01:06:55 PM »
I fell in love with A-frames years ago and would love to build one for my Sims. The problem is the roof. In real life A-frames the roof goes to the ground and if I use the regular roof it just doesn't look right. Would you use the MOO cheat and use the half roof? I saw one once at a CC site and it looked like the roof was put on in sections because there was a slight bump at regular intervals as you went down the slope.

Anyone know?

Use the gabled roof to cover the top as a whole, and then, from the ground floor, use half gabled roofing sections from the ground to the side of the house.  Depending on the length vs. width of the roof section, you may have to use the tall half gable vs. the normal half gable.  Play with it until you find the angle that lines up.

To do a half gable with side entry like pictured above, use the the half gables on both sides of the entry way, and then on the top floor, add a low pitched half gable that connects to the a-frame.

I also never knew it was possible to make A-frame house (With a roof that goes to the ground), so thanks, danefaith, for the answer and RunAmokSims for the question! :)

No, I have no real life building skills to be sure, just Sims.  ;D

My pleasure though.  Hope it helped.

I was asking if that was a Sim house that you built.

Ooooh.  Ah i see.  No I haven't built a house from that picture... I might have to give modern a-frame a shot though.  :D

I know that I'm committing thread necromancy, but I can't seem to find another good discussion about this.

I'm trying to build a log cabin from a floorplan, and, as you all probably know, most of them are either A-frames or have the second floor as a loft under the roof.

The problem is, when you do that, sims get an "unfinished room" moodlet because the roof doesn't count as a ceiling.  How do you make an A-frame that doesn't give the moodlet?

You give the house a flat roof first, then build a room on top of it, two to three tiles in from the angled edges. this will affect how steep your roof will be. Then give that room a flat roof too and draw your A-frame roof on the proper level. it will now work like a normal room.

Then you have to delete the walls and ceiling that are coming through the roof, right?  Won't this give the unfinished moodlet?

It won't. Because it will place the roof over the walls. Then you can still chainge the pitch of the roof as normal, but you must not let the upper edges of the wall stick out. If you want to, I can e-mail you a picture of an attic I built just like that, no problems there since day one. Walls do not stop roofs. It's a very useful design feature.

So the second story "loft" has to be a lot smaller than the ground footprint?  In log home houseplans they are the same, but in the game that is impossible?

And yes, I would very much like a pic of how to do this.  The only tutorial I could find was a dead link.  :(

Then PM me with your e-mail and I'll send you pictures of my classic french nectary, Bardi Estate. Two storeys plus a third in the roof. Family of six lives in the house. Of which five live in the roof. If I understand you correctly, then your description is coincidentally exactly what I did. From the pictures it should be obvious what to do.
