Things Sims Will or Won't do Autonomously

I don't think this has been mentioned (but if it has, please forgive me!) but my sims will autonomously take care of their babies. They'll feed them, play with them if their social bar is down, and change dirty diapers. However, they won't teach toddlers to walk, talk, or use the potty without being told. In the family I'm playing currently, neither parent has the family oriented trait, and they're still constantly playing with their son and taking care of him - it's so sweet!

I never play insane sims so this was a big surprise to me.  In the Upgrade challenge, I made 4 sisters who are all handy and insane, thinking they would fill their social need with talking to themselves.  Well, that's not the only thing insane sims do!  They will autonomously eat every single piece of high quality dried food in their inventory!  Every piece!

I know what you mean! I had an insane sim that gardened, and he constantly ate the garlic in his inventory.  He was stuffed a lot, and seemed to always have garlic breath.  Insane sims also spend lots of time just viewing objects like plants or gems.  I find it hilarious when they argue with themselves or choke themselves though.

I think I made this reply in an earlier post.  Yes, parents will teach their toddlers to walk.  So far mine has not taught toddlers to talk and they will not potty train, but I have had them teach them to walk on their own.

Just out of curiosity, did they have the family oriented trait?

Sometimes my sims will randomly go sit on a toilet or on the bathtub who knows why! It might have something to do with the insane trait maybe.

Do your sims have any regular chairs in the house?

OH I forgot I just deleted the couches to make room to take a picture so maybe thats why.

Insane Sims do like to sit on the bathtub or the toilet even if there is a suitable couch or chair available.

I've had non-insane sims do this, as well.  One sim I had was always eating the produce in her inventory, whether she was hungry or not.  I had to make sure I moved everything she harvested straight to the fridge to keep it safe.   I guess she just loved to snack.

I once had a "Legacy" where each generation I had 1 Sim that I was allowed to control.  For all the others I was only allowed to switch out their wants, add/remove things from their inventory, change their outfits, and help them get a job.  It was kind of fun to see all the crazy things my Sims would do without being prompted.  I especially enjoyed the change in social interactions between family members.  Without intervention there is a lot more reliance on traits when it comes to relationship building!

The interesting part that I discovered was that there are certain wants that are simply never going to be fulfilled autonomously.  I can't think of which ones at the moment, but I distinctly remember removing certain wants because I knew they wouldn't do them on their own.

This kind of sounds like an asylum challenge I read about once. I tried it, but I'm too much of a control freak to relinquish that much freedom to my sims. 

I don't know if this was a glitch that was resolved with a patch, but when I first got TS3, my sims always preferred to cook their meals on the grill instead of on the stove, which meant that they usually burned their dinners until their cooking skill was a bit higher. I got so tired of constantly having to check on my sims to see if they autonomously started grilling (and possibly starting a fire) that now I never put grills in my houses. Has this happened to anyone else?

I don't know that my sims actually prefer to cook on the grill, but they do it a lot unless I tell them to do otherwise.

I've never had any sims that prefer to cook on a grill, but then again I never buy one unless I got the money for it and have a wish for one as well. I do place the free grill you can get from being a celebrity though.

Ever since I played Generations, my Sims autonomously played on the water slide. They won't stop using the water slide, unless one of their needs go south, go to work, go to school, do their homework, or they're in their second trimester of pregnancy.

Yeah, Sims love their new toys.  I remember back when my Sims first got the Gnubb game.  Emma Hatch came over to visit and wouldn't stop playing.  None of my characters could get her to stop.  Long after midnight, she finally peed herself and decided it might be time to go home.
