Toddlers and children appear to only have a few default settings. Get them to grow up to teens and you might get a bit more variation. When mine were kids, they all looked exactly the same.

The Foster Five as teens with their proud mom Claire. As you can see, they still all look alike.

Their mother is the blond?  The adopted daughters look just like her in features!

Pam, I think the mother is the tan-skinned (the woman between the boys). She is higher than the boys, because she is YA, while they are Teen.
Well, that's your opinion, isn't it? And I'm not about to waste my time trying to change it. - Lady GaGa

I kinda just went on an adopting frenzy! I adopted 7 girls so here they are

This one here is Rebecca! Her natural hair color was actually blonde, suprisingly not either of the premade colors, but I thought this color suited her better. She's probably my favorite out of all of them and also the only dark skinned one.

This is Michelle. She turned out as skinny as a stick and even stuffing her face with food wouldn't make her gain weight.  :D

Her name is Patricia. She turned out a bit Husky and with the same hair color Rebecca had at first.

This is Annabelle. What was interesting about her is that she came out with a strange greenish colored hair with brown roots.

This is my 5th adopted kid named Roxanne. She looks just like Annabelle but with different colored eyes and less greenish hair.

Her name is Lily. She turned out even fatter than Patricia and with very pale skin. She's probably my least favorite out of all of them.

And Last but not least here is Pam! She turned out very well she's probably my second favorite out of all of them! Well thats it for now but I plan on adopting 7 boys now too see how they turn out.  ;D

Thanks to all the people who have found the time to adopt lots of sim-babies and post their pictures here.

I think it's quite clear that there is very little variety in adopted children their facial structure - at least in these girls and from earlier pictures it seems it's similar for males. They all have the same eyes, mouth, nose and eyebrow shape. It also appears that they have very similar face-shapes, but it's harder to see due to the different weights. That probably is one of the few things that differ, as well as their hair colour and actual eyebrows.

I must say that even though I suspected after this thread started it still is a little disappointing to see it so clearly after these "test runs". You'd think EA would've come up with a better way to randomize the appearance of adopted children.

I wish so too. If  I put all the same hair and clothes and change the skin color of adopted kids the same they would probably all look identical!

Perhaps they did.  Go to CAS and hit the randomizer button a few times and see what happens.  You can get some hideous looking sims lol.

It might have been better if it just pulled a random sim from the pre-made sims bin in CAS, and then aged them down.  At least that way, you could "stock the pond" yourself.

I see your point, a truely randomized appearance would quickly stop all adopting requests :P However, giving them all default looks is not the best solution in my opinion. Yours would already be much better, and a few others I can easily think of (such as randomizing their features within set limits). I guess that was too much work and time (and thus money) to implement. In game design you always pick your show horses and compromise on other items.

You know, when I'm feeling at loose ends and not really like playing the game, I often to into CAS and do just that.  You're right, there are some bizarre looking folks that pop out from that, but every now and then you get a gem that looks more realistic than anyone you could have designed yourself.

I have a new theory. I think adopted children are defaulted to have similar genetic traits to the adoptee parents.

Also I wonder if you adopt them all at the same time aka 5 todlers then they look alike, but if you adopt a todler then when they grow up adopt a baby will they look alike?
