The Sims Medieval - Cheats Won't Work
« on: April 21, 2011, 02:12:01 AM »
Okay so I tried to edit the cheat file within the game...found the folder but it wouldn't let me save even when I unchecked read only in properties. Has anyone else had a problem enabling the testing cheat code?

Hi Ms Honey,

Carl has done a guide on how to edit the cheat file. The game has made it read-only, so if you can't save it after unchecking it, you can save it somewhere else, then copy and replace the exisiting file.

I know he's done the guide I've seen it already and followed each step and it won't let me save the file. I've tried saving it somewhere else and copied it into the location but i wasn't able to enable cheats still. But I'll try one more time! Thanks for your response though!

Are you using a mac? I've seen a lot of posts from people having trouble enabling cheats on macs. I did see something specific in the ea forum about it, though I don't know how much help it will be - I disregarded it seen as I use a PC.

I've just run into the same problem as Ms Honey.  A quest I'm doing won't advance so I tried to turn on the testing cheats following the instructions in the guide, but the file would not save.

No I'm using a PC not a MAC....I'm running Windows Vista. I love using the test cheats too! Oh, well, I'll just use the regular cheats until I figure out how to enable the test cheats.

I'm glad I'm not the only one!! I've looked all over the internet and couldn't find any other site besides this one talking about the test cheats!

Oh... VISTA... that explains everything. SO many reasons to despise it. Do you have XP? Rather than going out to buy Windows 7, you could go back to XP and you'd have a much better chance of EVERYTHING working. Of course, if you can afford it and want to, Windows 7 is pretty good.

eww why would i go back to XP, and its not a Vista issue I was on the EA forums for Medieval Sims and found this....

How to Enable Test Cheats:

Note that Test Cheats can break the game. Use them at your own discretion. There are known instances where using some of the Testing Cheats will cause problems with game saves, and in some extreme instances have cause crashes when used in error.

PC

1. Access the Program File: (C:/programfiles/electronicarts/thesimsmedieval/gamedata/shared/nonpackaged/ini)
 - Use your My Computer / Computer in your Start menu to access your main drive (usually C). For 68 Bit Operating Systems us the Program Files 68. Open the 'Electronic Arts' Folder > Open the 'thesimsmedieval' folder > Open the 'gamedata' folder > Open the 'shared' folder > Open the 'nonpackaged' folder > Open the 'ini' Folder.

2. Create a Backup of the Command.ini File
- Find the application named: 'Commands.ini' Copy it. Create a New Folder and label it Original Command ini. Open it and save the copied 'Commands.ini'. This is your backup. If you have problems, you can recopy this backup to the 'ini' folder.

3. Edit the Command.ini File.
A - Remove Read Only Status
Go back to the ini folder. Right Click on the Command.ini application, and select Properties. in the Properties box, un-check (deselect) the Read Only box. Apply and Save.
 B - Edit the Code
Open the Command.ini file. It will open as a Notepad Document. Change TestingCheatsEnabled=0 to TestingCheatsEnabled=1. Save the File.

Problems with Admin Rights - further required steps to modify the files.

If you get an Admin Rights Required error when you try to save / implement changes, you must do the following:
When you are in the Properties Pop Up Box for the Command.ini document. Click the 'Security' tab. Go to User Group or User Names, and click Administrator. In that pop up select Edit, which will open the window: Permissions for Commands. In the box listed as User Group or User Names, select "Administrators". Select 'Full Control' in the 'Permissions for Administrators' box. (All boxes below should shade gray when done correctly). Click Apply. Now change User Group or User Name to 'Users'. Select 'Full Control'. (Again, everything should shade to gray.) Click Apply, and OK to save changes.

(Credit to heartlessstar for the detailed step by step, which was originally listed here.

Mac Users
For now go here.

Using the new Test Cheats:
Once you have enabled testing cheats in your game files, they can be used just like the existing in game cheats - through the consol.

The new Test Cheat options available are:
moveobjects (On or Off) - Removes placement constraints in design mode. (Improper use can crash your game!)
disablerespos-Disable Daily Responsibilities. (Sandbox Mode Cheat)
enablerespos- Turns responsibilities back on.
setkingdompoints (#) - set your Kingdom Points to whatever number you enter, up to 9999
setKP (#)- set your Kingdom Points to whatever number you enter, up to 9999
setQP (#)- sets your Quest Points to whatever number you enter, up to 9999 (Sandbox Mode Cheat)
setmood (min, max, or supermax) - Changes Focus meter results. Reset with setmood 0?
showallquests- shows all quests in your quest list. (Sandbox Mode Cheat)
showallvaidquests-shows all quests which you might be eligible to complete.
showallvalitquestNoAspects- ??
disableclothingfilter (off or on) -unrestricted clothing options for all your sims when set to on.

Shift & Click Cheats. (Test Cheats Enabled is required)
Pressing the Shift key while simultaneously selecting a character (left click) will open up a new options menu that allows you to manipulate character specific data, such as Traits, Flatal Flaw, Relationship Levels, - you can even change the sims profession (but you cant change it back so be careful!) You can't change the sims level. Shift & Click Reset has been recommended as a fix for stuck characters, but this is not always successful. You can also use Shift & Click (on the ground) to teleport your sim. Another very useful options is to Shift & Click on the Quest Advancement Icon, which will automatically complete the required quest step. Really useful if your stuck and want to move on!

I don't think I want to go through all the above steps to fix the problem.  It's clearly a game bug, and I'm just not comfortable doing something that "can break the game."  Not when I can fix it easily and safely by just quitting the quest.  Of course, that means I'll lose those QP, but that's not the end of the world.

Incidentally, the quest I'm stuck in the Fountain of Legend, which I've done before with no problems.  My alcoholic spy is supposed to "Get a drink."  That's the step that won't go away; he's been getting drinks until he's quite sloshed.  I'm considering joining him!   ;)

Won't work for me either. I have had to reinstall my game trying to get this done. It is not worth messing everything up over.

Vista isn't as bad as some people claim.  I run it and don't have any problems with it.  Also, I'd appreciate it if you'd not suggest changing operating systems as the solution to an issue on Sims Medieval.  That's more than a little extreme.

What is the Quest Advancement Icon?
Is it the box by the Sim picture that tells you the next step in the quest?

My sincerest apologies. I could have perhaps expressed that a little better. It is a matter of personal preference of course, but Vista is notoriously a less stable gaming platform. I didn't think that changing OS was such a big deal (especially if it is a compatability issue - though apparently not in this case), but then, my husband fixes computers as a hobby. Ideally (though depending on how much use a computer gets) it should be reformatted every 12 months, which is an good time for a new OS. I didn't mean to offend, I'm simply so used to hearing complaints about it I didn't expect it to be taken that way. Generally we commiserate about our games not working on it, and move on. Would it be better in future to suggest that there may be a software or OS conflict? I really only wanted to help pinpoint the problem.
