Controlling a whole family of sims?
« on: April 17, 2011, 05:44:07 AM »
Sorry if this is a silly question, or posted in the wrong part of the forum..

I'm getting TS3 today on PC. I know I want to make a family oriented Sim who's lifetime wish is possibly the surrounded by family one so, although it'll be a while before it actually happens, I want the Sims to have lots and lots of kids! (6 or 7 :D) But what I was wondering was.. when the kids grow up to be adults and possibly get married, etc. or even if they don't get married but still want to move out and live on their own, can I move them out? And once I have moved them out, can I control them but also all the other Sims in the family household and any other Sims that have moved out? Basically, the whole family? I was told you can only control one household at a time and as soon as they move out their not your Sim to control anymore?

You can move them out but the only way to control them or any other household would be to go to edit town and change active household.
Your original Sim family can go visit any of the offspring that leave home but you wouldn't be able to control them.

I believe that any sim that you have ever controlled and later moved out will not leave the town either.  Their life story will progress if you have that turned on though.

Populating a town with massive generations has a risk.

Since story progression spends a bit of time figuring out what inactive sims are doing, your computer can only handle so many sims in the town at once.  After that threshold has been reached, story progression will "cull the herd."  This is done by moving sims out of the town, and forcing sims to die in tragic accidents.  Good Guy is correct in his statement that relatives of the active family will not be story progressions first choice to move out, but relatives of the family are fair game for accidental deaths.

The risks are mostly theoretical, and some are just how it's perceived.  As townies leave, you lose potential future spouses, and as sims become "more related," it might be possible that you end up with a minuscule generation or two in the town until some of the townies started dying of old age.  This would only be temporary, since story progression will move new townies in if the population gets low, but it could make things scary for a bit.  :P  The perceived risk is that when story progression doles out "summary executions for game performance," the youngest sims are usually the victims.  Babies and toddlers will start dying of starvation or other unnatural causes.  Several players have found this to be unconscionable.

However, if you wanted to achieve this lifetime wish, you should be fine in doing so.  It usually takes a lot of sims to trigger this.

Oh. :'( Why can't they kill other Sims from the town instead of my sim's family? :(

I believe that the reason it was done this way is because the older sims are more likely to have some form of relationship with a sim in the active household.  Should a sim work with another sim who is killed by way of story progression, career performance of your sim would suffer for a bit until the new employee is met and befriended.  Also, infants, toddlers and children cannot live in a household by themselves.  Since single parenthood is a possibility, it's possible that they don't wish to create a situation to where a baby could be living alone.

Sims that you've controlled and moved out are not exempt from Story Progression and will indeed leave town.  I've had it happen a number of times.  I even went so far as to invite the adult child that moved out of town to visit and move in, then move that adult child back out again to get the family back in town.  I've done that at least a couple of times.  So, really, Sims you've controlled and moved out are subject to all of Story Progression's woes.

Wow. You guys are really far on compared to me! Normally I get bored of a family and I've never got further then the 3 gen, and that was only a baby, and it was on Sims 2.
Mm...

@Leto married with her first child is correct we would also say married with children. If fez had put married to her first child now that would be wrong.

On several different levels, no less.
