The 8 Sim max can indeed get in the way during the Legacy Family Challenge.  There were several times when I either had to wait for someone to die or move someone out of the house before I could have any more babies.  It's especially bothersome if someone has a lot of kids.  Some of my Sims had 5 or 6 kids.

I now have enough room for the founder and his 2 kids, maybe they can both have 2 children, but then it's over.
I hate to have to let someone move out.
Strangely I get attached to my sims.

The hope is that your legacy family will bring in lots of money while the second generation is playing.  It won't take long before you'll be able to build a huge house.  I just kept adding on to my house and rearranging the rooms as needed.  It ended up being a three story mansion by at least the 8th generation, maybe earlier.  Then it got to the point where I had nowhere else to expand it.  That's when I started making the rooms much more opulent and fancy.  It currently has 9 bedrooms if you count the nursery, and 6 bathrooms!  If you want to see pictures of it, let me know and I'll give you the link to my blog.

Yeah, I'm building a bigger home now.
It's now a 2 story building with 3 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms.
As soon as Brandon has Monika move in I'll start building a 3rd floor with only Bedrooms and bathroom.

I tend to keep the same house and just remodel also.  The one thing especially I love about sims 3 is, if you have expanded your house to the limits of the lot, just move the house to a bigger lot!  I love it!

The one thing especially I love about sims 3 is, if you have expanded your house to the limits of the lot, just move the house to a bigger lot!  I love it! 

Ooh, cool. Can you bring the garden too?

I haven't seen a way to move your garden to a new place.  I'd love to hear about it if it's possible.

Hehe.  Thanks Kreathyr.  It started out as a very small one room house, probably much like yours.  I kept adding to it a little at a time...  expanding the walls out and making more rooms.  When the founders died, I took out their original bedroom to make room for a staircase and added a second floor.  Again, more wall expanding.  Then finally added the third floor and had enough money to make it opulent.  Once everyone was moved to the two upstairs floors, I gutted the entire first floor (which was the original house) and put in the huge dining and living areas that you see now.  I didn't build a nice house from scratch like you're doing.  Mine really did start out as just a square.  I'm pretty proud of my Legacy family.  The 11th generation has been born and lives in the house now.  Now that the challenge itself is done, I've brought the founder back from the dead.  The current generation also eats Ambrosia.  No harm because I already completed the challenge by bringing in the 10th generation.  Now I can do whatever I want!

I don't think this house will be the definitive version as well.
I probably need to expand the ground floor and the 2nd floor for more space.
The 2nd floor is a lot smaller than the first floor and the 3rd will be even smaller (I just like how it looks that way).

I have to agree with Derenic. Big homes means it takes the sims longer to get from the bedroom to the kitchen to cook a meal and then be off for school/work.

I always tend to make large spaces when I build my own homes. Personally I think it looks better, less chance of sims getting into pathing issues and to me those reasons are worth the extra time. I just make them go to sleep sooner so they wake earlier and then they have plenty of time to get ready before their school/work day begins.

You're right, If a sim goes to sleep while not really sleepy he'll wake up earlier.
Most of my sims when they go to work or school wake up at around 3:00 am.
That way they get to eat shower and play video games before going to work/school and even learn some skills for promotions.
