Tartans (Plaid) - Geometric Patterns by Gheez

I imagine that I could attempt to re-create a proper Clan Tartan... or possibly see if someone else has already created one and then credit them?  I can give it a go, if you'd like?

If you're playing around and would like something to practice on, would you mind trying out the Douglas tartan?  There are several versions of this, but the most common one is the dark green & blue one, sometimes called Hunting Douglas.  I tried to imitate it for the Clan Douglas Dynasty, but it would sure be nice to have a proper tartan for my Sims!  There's a grey version of the Douglas tartan that's also quite nice.

Hunting Douglas

This tartan was created in honour of Schipperke and at her request.  The Hunting Douglas tartan pre-dates the Scottish Register of Tartans and has been worn proudly by members of the Douglas Clan for innumerable generations.  No disrespect to the proud name of Douglas is intended by the naming of the various sizes of pattern.

Douglas Grey

In the 12th Century the Douglas Clan were settled in Lanarkshire and were considered one of the most powerful families in Scotland.  In more modern times, auxiliary officers of the UK's RAF 2622 (Highland) Squadron are entitled to wear the Grey Douglas tartan kilt as part of their mess uniform, a privilege granted to all Scottish RAuxAF officers by King Edward VIII.

I found this tartan too difficult to create using the Tartan Pattern Maker, so found an image on a regimental site that was suitable for conversion into CAP.

Black Douglas

Although Schipperke didn't request this one, it seems so appropriate considering that the founder of her successful Clan Douglas Dynasty, James, was named after Sir James Douglas, aka The Black Douglas; though it must be said that the Scottish Register of Tartans states that the historical character, Black Douglas, is unconnected with this tartan.

I hope that the representation, here, is okay.  I really struggled getting the correct blue.  This was version 3.

I really hope that they are okay. I had a little problem with colours not being quite the same shade once I got them into CAP.  There are several more Douglas tartans in the Scottish Register of Tartans, so let me know if you'd like some more (or other clan's tartans) - though I can't promise to be able to replicate some of the more difficult ones.

Three Douglas tartans!  I have died and gone to heaven!  Gheez, you are incredible.  Thank you so much!  As you say, there are a number of variations of Douglas tartan.  Some I've seen only in pictures, not in actual cloth, but they all appear to be the same basic plaid with colour variations.  I have a length of fabric I purchased in Scotland that's grey with light tan, very subtle and very nice.

These plaids will definitely be showing up in my games as soon as I can download them.  I am really delighted with them.

Clan MacDonald

This Clan tartan was created at the request of Magz from Oz.  It is a representation of the oldest recorded version of the Clan MacDonald tartans.  It is also the tartan worn the Canadian Reserve Regiment: 1st Battalion, The Nova Scotia Highlanders (North).  No disrespect to the proud name of MacDonald is intended by the naming of the various sizes of pattern.

The tartan is in blue, red and green. It appears purple in CAP - I think that this must be an optical illusion caused by the effect of the red line crossing the blue - I hope that this doesn't affect the usability of the pattern.

Clan Sinclair

This Clan tartan was created at the request of Magz from Oz.  This representation of the Clan Sinclair tartan is the version that appears in a portrait of Alexander the 13th Earl of Caithness.  No disrespect to the proud name of Sinclair is intended by the naming of the various sizes of pattern.

The pattern has been prepared from a section of a photograph of the actual tartan sourced from the Scottish Register of Tartans.

Sinclair Hunting

This Clan tartan was created at the request of Magz from Oz.  Hunting tartans are generally coloured in blue and green or browns. I was surprised to discover that the term 'hunting' refers to their somewhat more muted colours rather than meaning that they were worn when the Clans were actually out hunting.  Apparently, Clans whose tartan is already in these shades do not have hunting tartans.  (Sorry was that too much irrelevant information?)  No disrespect to the proud name of Sinclair is intended by the naming of the various sizes of pattern.

Oh, how exciting - new Gheez tartans!

Nice to see you  again, Gheez.  Thanks very much for the new tartans,which are downloading as we speak! 

By the way, if you'd be willing to consider a request, I would very much appreciate an Oliver tartan.  From what I can gather, the most common version of the Oliver tartan is predominantly red and black with yellow, although there are probably other versions, any of which would be lovely.

I'm happy to try an Oliver tartan and thanks for letting me know which one you're most interested in, for you're quite right, there are a few other versions.  I've just gone to have a look and I may need to do the red one from a fabric sample, as there seem to be rather a few lines.  Hope that will be okay.

Just a quick explanation about the two versions of the Oliver tartan (next post).  I wasn't really happy with the width of the yellow stripe when recreating it in the 'tartan maker' so I prepared a pattern using a picture of the actual cloth.  However, felt it was a little too thready to use in the smaller sizes.  However, if it is preferred, then I'm willing to provide the 'thready' version in the smaller sizes.
