I decided to have a try at this with my knight at level 7 with high quality armor and weapon (don't know if that makes a difference, but it made me feel better to know she had decent gear) and no debuffs other than 1 stack of 'Blinded by Hubris'.

She fed the beast 3-4 times (and saved my game) before jumping in the pit.  Out of 4 attempts, 2 of them were attacks and 2 were sweet tentacles of love.  She made it out without any injuries all 4 times and I don't believe she has befriended the beast yet.  On one attempt she got a doomsword hilt, but no other goodies on the other tries.

It was great xp and a lot of fun.  I'm definitely going to do this again!

What I have found is if the character has access to anything that gives more then about 10exp a tick for training, the pit is not as efficient.

Good job Zetshia I knew the thing with the tender loving from the beast  (;D) and I have also seen the experience popping up while in the pit but are you sure you get that much xp?

You get 200 XP each time you jump in and battle the beast, even if you die!  Of course, being dead kind of makes it a moot point, doesn't it?  I did it six times in a row just to see what would happen, and how much you have to feed the beast.  One feeding it's pretty chancey as to whether you survive, great armor or not.  Odds are in the beasts favor.  Two feedings, good focus and armor and the odds are closer to your favor.  Three or more feedings and you are much more likely to have sweet, tentacle love even if your focus and armor are not in great shape.

The beast isn't a mean monster.  If you just listen at night you'll hear the beast "mourning" and whimpering.  Rather like a dog who has been neglected, (or feels he/she is neglected), or has been kenneled  for some reason at home.  They carry on as if you have beaten them and deserted them for life.  The beast is a trapped animal who is in the dark, scared, lonely, hungry and in need of food and attention.  If you feed it a lot and then go visit it and give it loves, it gives you loves back along with your 200 xp.
What?  Grannies can't play games?

Thanks for this suggestion, Zetshia!  It's been a lot of fun; before now, I didn't have anyone jump into the pit or be sentenced to it, but now my heroes dive in several times a day!  I've found that the beast seems to prefer some heroes over others.  It regularly killed my wizard (even when the wizard came out alive they fought first).  But my priest and physician get nothing but tentacle love.  I feed the beast twice when my characters have a lot of good buffs and no wounds, and then they hop in.  I don't bother with armor (the puny characters don't have any anyway).

I know you'll get 100XP while you're in the pit if you find a doomsword piece, but you definitely 200XP every time your sim crawls out of the pit alive.

I am not entirely certain but I think that the quality of the meat may have something to do with how much one must feed the beast before "playing" with it. I notice that I must feed the beast three pieces of venison but only one piece of bear or boar meat.

I too make certain that my heroes have a full (or nearly full) focus bar and no wounds. Has anyone else made similar observations or might I just be observing what is sometimes called a "random walk" and just getting several 'good' rolls out of the game's random number generator?

I think I fed the beast with one piece of boar meat last day with my loved monarch and didn't work for the first time but the second time did work. I guess it's the game's random number generator after all.

If you get a piece of the Doomsword you not only get 100 XP for finding it, but you get another 200 XP when you get out.  Score!

I save just before my hero jumps in.  If s/he dies, I go back to the main menu, reload the game, and have the hero jump again.  The hero almost always lives the second time.  I don't change the meat, the buffs, or anything in between, so I'm guessing that the live/die thing is random to some extent.

Thx for the tip it helped me out alot, but I did notice that the classes get diff xp, for instance my doc jumped in and got 250xp, and my Monarch jumped and got 199xp. I did this with great focus and no debuffs on.
