Sigh, it's like the Pink Diamonds are a legend of some sorts.

You can get pink diamonds in the vanilla Sims 3 game, but they are very rare.  You'd have to be an avid collector to really have a chance of getting one.  I've gotten a few before I got World Adventures.  In fact, I provided the picture Carl used on the guide here:  http://www.carls-sims-3-guide.com/skills/collecting/gems.php

The Sims Wiki shows the spawn spots for pink diamonds and rainbow gems. Before I got one of my Sims breaking space rocks, this was invaluable information: http://www.simswiki.info/wiki.php?title=Game_Help:Sims_3_Rocks_Gems_and_Metals

That's a great link Tiberium_Glow! Getting all gems from board breaking can get so monotonous sometimes! :D
I would like to go out for a little walk and find something there too.

Ok, I found a Pink one in a tomb, I had collection helper too and china looked very busy.

Ummm, this could be a stupid question but what is the 'Vanilla' Game about? Is it just a fancy term?

It's not a stupid question.  I had to ask the same question before I learned all the Sims 3 lingo.  A "vanilla" Sims 3 is the original game without any expansion packs added.  It's the base game that everyone had to buy to play.  Vanilla means no frills or additions, so it's just the original base game.

It's a general term used in lots of different game forums as well, for a base game without EPs or patches.
Sometimes, as very often here in this forum, "vanilla" refers to just the game without EPs, but the term "complete[ly] vanilla" is explicitly without any additions, patches or EPs alike.

I finally found my first pink diamond last night, in a sarcophagus in a French tomb--my sim had the learned relic hunter award, if that made any difference.  I was really pleased, since I needed one for the collectibles photography collection, so I made sure to save my game--and my game crashed while I was saving!

I'll have to try replaying and see if it shows up again; otherwise, I'll stalk those locations mentioned in the link above.

Gems and relics are two different animals, so I doubt it. Congrats on the great find. I've never found one myself.

Well, the relic hunter blurb does say something about improved value of other collectibles too, so it might have had an effect.  But considering I've done quite a few tombs with two relic hunters, and this is the first time a pink diamond has come up, it's not exactly a reliable method!

Ah, I've never grabbed that reward, so wasn't aware of the exact wording. Well then, that's a distinct possibility that that reward had an impact on finding the pink diamond.
