Queens, Female Heroes and More Questions
« on: March 30, 2011, 09:06:40 PM »
I'm making a decision whether to buy Medieval on Sunday. I need to ask these questions before I make the purchase: I am fond of playing as lead Sim character, female Sims.  In this game, can a Queen rule over a kingdom (sort of like the Queen Elizabeths) or does the monarch have to be a King? What about female heroes? Once a princess is born and grows up, do they get thrown out of the palace and are they playable? Are there many clothes/costumes to choose from? Different Hairstyles? Can we edit the colors of the furniture/clothes etc? Thanks for your replies!  :)

Athena, I play much like you do so my monarch is a queen.  My bard is female.  My Peteran priest is female.  Etc. etc etc.  The only three I chose to be male were the smith, (and I really didn't have to), the Jacoban priest and the wizard, (simply because I wanted to name him Rincewind!).

There is a large variety of choices in clothes, facial looks and hair styles.  Initially you get one choice, but don't forget to unlock the hair so the next time you go into CAS to add the rest of the clothes, you can select different hair styles for each outfit.

The fabric choices are relatively limited, but not horribly so.  Styles are not.  You CAN recolor all the clothes or parts of the clothes to suit your taste.

My queen had a prince however be aware that the child your monarch bears will take on the traits and occupation name of the father.  Therefor my heir is Lil' Smith Jonathan instead of "prince".  Annoying but so are kids in general in this game.  There is extremely little interaction with them and, as far as I know, they never age up past child.

There is a wide selection of furniture and it can be recolored with what is in your menu for that.  My suggestion is make different clothes/patterns and be sure you save each color and pattern so it will be available for your furniture.  The furniture, floors and walls are not terrific but can be slightly improved by covering them with designs.  Once you have lots of money you can choose different floor patterns and walls but I just used my rugs for my wall and floor patterns since I was impatient and hated looking at nothing but stone.

My favorite thing to do is build and you are really limited to just redecorating.  Once I discovered there were so many choices for doing this I stopped being disappointed in not being able to build my own castle.
What?  Grannies can't play games?
I speak perfect Nooblik, (and some Simlish)!

First, you can have a female play any of the hero roles.  The children do not grow up in this game, at least not to my knowledge.  There is not that many clothes in this game, but you can recolor them.  Of course the furniture is quite a bit different in this game, but you can still recolor them also.  All in all, in my opinion, the game still has my attention and we all are still in a learning mode.  Just keep an open mind and if you do get it, play it for a while and get the feel of it.  It is quite a different experience than the sims3, but in a good way. :)

I also have a queen and both of her sons are called "Prince."  One's father is a Trickster and the other's father is a Town Watchman.

I'm fairly pleased with the selection of clothing.  I've noticed that some groups have different clothing available.  For example, the queen has choices from fancier dresses than the priest does.  They stay fairly close to the class of the hero.  There are only one piece outfits, but that just makes it easier.  This isn't a game to create your perfect Sim, so it's not as important to be able to choose shoes, accessories, etc.

So far, I've made all of my heroes female (queen, physician, priest, blacksmith).

I think it's when you finish your first kingdom that you get more clothes and hair styles and they are AWESOME.  The more wealthy ones are fabulous but so are the ones you could choose for like a bard or spy.  Really nice.  There are a couple of what I call "weird" ones but it may just be they look weird on women.  The gals get more pants outfits at that time as well as more dressy ones, even for the poverty stricken there are prettier, while still a bit raggedy, clothes.

Thanks so much for your immediate replies! I'm now more convinced that I should get the game. Just two last questions pls... If the children do not grow up as I was told, what about the adult Sims, do they get old too, i.e. become elders? Are there different adventures for every class? I mean, the adventures of a smith are different from the adventures of a bard? Or do they all have same adventures, but different characters can play them? Thanks again!  :)

I don't believe they age to elders.  They don't age at all, really, except when a baby ages to child.

And yes, each hero has unique quests to perform.  There are some that overlap where it's the same quest played by different heroes, but not all are like that.

I also have a queen and both of her sons are called "Prince."  One's father is a Trickster and the other's father is a Town Watchman.

I think there is a running theory on the forum here that if the female hero has a child with one of your male heroes then the child will take on the name of the father's profession.  My queen married and had a child with my Jacoban priest and he was 'Li'l Shepherd' instead of 'Prince'.  The same held true for all my other female/male hero combinations.

In Pam's case, her queen had children with 'townies', to use a TS3 reference, and we believe that may be why they have the title 'Prince'.  This is all speculation at this point, but it seems to match what a number of us have observed.

Another thing about children is you can't influence the baby's gender like you can in TS3 - you get what you get.  Pregnancy take about 1 sim day and kids go from nooboo directly to child in about 2 more sim days.  You only have the choice to feed and cuddle if you're the mother and any hero sim in your control can also cuddle the nooboo.  There is a good thread here about children.

Each adventure (quest) will give you several choices of heroes that can do it.  Some quests require only a primary hero, some also include a secondary hero - it's a bit more challenging controlling 2 heroes simultaneously, but once you get comfortable with the game mechanics it's not too difficult.

For me the game started out slowly - I didn't love it right out of the box like I did with TS3 (my first real Sims experience).  It took me probably a good 5 hours of play to stop comparing it to TS3 and really love it for what it is.  That was just my experience, many other people on the forum loved it as soon as they started playing.  I definitely would recommend getting it and, if you find that it's not what you expected once you start playing, give it some time.  This game definitely will grow on you!

Hmm it was different in my experience.  My first queen married a Marquis who was hanging around the castle.  They had a son and he had the title of Prince.  Then I did the assasination quest and my next queen married the Master Builder.  They had a daughter and she had the title of Princess.

I think the Master Builder and Marquis are considered NPCs, so their children wouldn't get their titles.

I started with a Queen too.  :)

I made my knight a male, and I had the two of them get married.  And then to avoid child care duties I let them have kids while I was playing the knight that way the Queen would just autonomously take care of the babies.

The Child of my Queen and the Knight took the Knights name but I think it could be because I was playing him when she was pregnant and gave birth.

I'm personally still considering whether to take the game back and exchange it for something worth my money. My biggest complaints are the crap graphics - not much better than Sims 1; the UI is a pain (though found that i can rotate and change camera angle using the middle mouse scroll button, even though it's not enabled on the UI panel); and the fact that they trimmed out SO many of the Sims features. You can't build at all - I really wanted to build my own castle - I got really excited when I saw curved walls on the promo video. Only 2 basic needs! Sure, most of them get met one way or another using the buffs instead, but still...

But then I got drawn in by the questing. I was still very excited about playing the blackmith and the physician - the crafting is a lot of fun, and getting the best gear for all characters is in line with most RPGs.

But then I discovered how repetitive they are. Once you finish an ambition you start all over. every kingdom is the same. And really, how many of us play characters that are that differ greatly? I usually play a few different types, but often settle with a few favourites with minor variations. Not much replayability.

And then the bugs... I'm sure they'll get fixed.... eventually - but do I really want to wait around, or do I want to get my money back in the event that it stays crappy? I'm not sure how much the price will come down later, but I'd happily feel that I got my money's worth for say, $20AU, but $100 is so not worth it.

Interesting. My female Monarch, Queen Rosamund of Leighton Buzzard, had two daughters by the builder guy (hey, she's licentious, and he was always around!), and both of them are called Princess (then first name). The first child, Princess Lilleigh, has the Evil trait, which neither parent has. I learn something new every time I play!

The builder guy isn't a Hero, which is why the children were titled after their mother.  If it's two Heroes having a child together, the child will be titled after the father.
