Move game to new computer
« on: March 30, 2011, 04:45:59 PM »
Hi. I am moving Sims 3 to a brand new computer due to a bunch of glitches that I've been getting. I've built some houses and would hate to lose them. How can I move my own built houses to the new computer?

Thanks,

Jude

If they're finished, the easiest way I can think of would be to "share" each one of the houses so it creates a file for them in your "exports" folder.  Then copy them to a flash drive and transfer those files to your "imports" folder on your new computer.  You can then use the game launcher to place the houses to your empty houses bin.

However, if your old computer has too many issues or if they're not finished yet, it might actually be easier to simply copy the saves of them and transfer them to the saves folder on your new computer.  You can then extract the houses by any means you see fit, or continue to work on them.

You could always upload them to the exchange if you don't have a way to "physically" move them to the new computer.  Then once your new computer is set up, you could download them.

If I simply copy my "The Sims 3" Folder and paste it into my new computer, will my families and houses be safe (in the library)? I am NOT losing some of them, and I must have 100 families.

You can move everything you've made in the game (saved games, houses, Sims) by copying the Sims 3 folder in Documents.

Yes. It needs to be this folder:
C:\Users\"Username"\Documents\Electronic Arts\The Sims 3

- not the one in Program Files.
If you copy that folder in Documents and place it in the same place on a new computer your game will be exactly the same as before.

I just did this on my computer.  The best way is like hosfac said.  I bought a flash drive, put it in my old computer, moved my saves folder to the flash drive and then put it in my other computer.  I only had a 4 gig flash, so I had to do this two times.  I didn't realize in just my saves alone it was more than 4 gigs, but I got them moved.  You also have a file in the EA folder named "library".  You can also put that on a flash drive.  That is all your families in your library.  This is just a different route and it is very simple.  If I can do it, anyone can, lol.  Only thing is, if you have purchased things from the store or have free items in your purchase history, those will have be downloaded after your new computer is set up.  Good luck.  I will probably be doing this again in a few weeks myself. :)
