The Pets patch introduced a name randomiser in CAS which I've been using a lot lately because I struggle with surnames. It has some interesting suggestions for first names, too. I went to make a cowgirl Sim and it suggested Sunny Cotton.  :)

In TS2, there was a town called Veronaville, filled to the brim with great names from Shakespeare - Desdemona, Romeo, Juliet, Consort, Caesar (not from Shakespeare, though an ancestor of the Capp family), Tybalt, Mercutio... and surnames like Monty, Capp... I now have an idea!

On the general tab (where you type the Sim's name), there will be a pair of dice in the top right hand corner (just above the box for a surname). Click it.

This came up in the Baby Boomer Challenge earlier this year, but I don't know that it made its way here.  This is the site I often use for names: http://www.behindthename.com/ .  It has a random namer which allows you to pick from among which languages you'd like, it has all those names listed by language, too, it will pick a last name if you ask (from a sister site) and it also has the most popular names by decade going back to the 19th century.

I actually use NameMySim (http://namemysim.com/index.php), which has some really cool names. There are female first names, male, last names and even magical and funny last names.
When Einstein's students took exams, one student asked him: "But you're asking the same questions from the last term." Einstein: "That's right. Only the answers are different this time.

I once took a creative writing class and one of the exercises was to go through the phone book and make a list of male names, female names, and last names, that you could combine to make up characters with.  It was exhausting and took me quite a number of nights to complete.  I've used that file ever since.  Here it is in word form for anyone who would like to use it!

Names I chooses are depending at the last name. If it's Italian, like Alto or German like Wolff and Goth, therefore I naming these babies after which last name they have.

However I just suggest Norwegian/Norse names (who doesn't love names from own country?? :P )
Boy names:

Arle
Ask
Brynjulf
Egon
Eilev
Erlen
Falk
Fenris
Haakon
Hauk
Jarle
Krister
Lavrans
Sigurd
Torgrim

Girl names:

Bergljot
Bjørnhild
Borghild
Canutte
Dagmar
Embla
Eira
Elida
Eyvor
Helle
Karita
Kirsti
Ludvikke
Margit
Sigrid
Svanhild
Ulvhild

It's much more, and old Norwegian names contents many animal in their names, as Falk (falcon), Hauk (hawk), Bjørn (bear), Orm (serpent) and Ulv (wolf)
Girl names also, but adds 'hild' in ending of the names, as Bjørnhild, Ulvhild, Svanhild (Svan is a shortened word of svane = swan)

Nature is also much usen, Storm (storm), Stein (stone), Berg (small mountain) Ask and Eik (names at trees) and girls names as Vår (spring), Blomst (flower), Sol (sun)
