The big day is finally here and Sims Medieval has hit the streets!  Use this thread to give your first impressions of the game.

Carl and Metro have posted their first thoughts about Sims Medieval over on their vacation thread.  I'm copying them here.

Carl writes:

"We're having a lot of fun with Medieval so far. It's bringing back that sense of excitement and exploration that has vanished for me with The Sims 3.  Dueling, and exploring the kingdom is quite fun. The only thing we've really found lacking so far is some of the quests for Merchants. You know the type -- you're sent off to talk to this Sim, then go across the map to speak to another or do something silly in a rabbit hole just to run back across the map and find you're not quite done. Some of that isn't very exciting but the quests are of the same quirky nature with The Sims' signature humor. It is very reminiscent of World Adventures' China due to the walking time and the way Quests are often easy to complete. We've seen more depth to them, however, in that they sometimes involve multiple steps and you can choose in which order to tackle them.

Myself, I'm getting the itch to write. I can't wait to crack it open and figure out how everything works. Traits are very odd, and finding good uses for them will definitely take time. We're seeing an end in sight although a game is quite long. It'll take the average person a few days to finish up a Kingdom, and that's with some fairly heavy play. This evokes a sense of great replayability. You won't be able to pull everything off in one Kingdom, although you will still find better routes to improving the kingdom score. Strategy will be important and I can't wait to advise people against certain quest lines that don't offer the kind of payoff for the price.

 At this time, I believe you are given 50 quest points to spend, and each quest you undertake will deduct from that, leading to an ending and score for the Kingdom. I'm not aware of any imposed time limit in days, so we'll likely find it's not worth it to rush through all of the quests. Meeting a Sim's needs and making them happier through buffs (moodlets) is still very important. We're down to 38 quest points and have only touched upon the Monarch, Knight, and Merchant. There's no juggling involved. You switch between characters with each quest you take on.

We tried a cheat, and do know that motherlode works. This lead to unlocking an achievement for Tom's account, raising his Watcher level which will represent how much he's accomplished in the game once it's been registered. This bug needs fixed asap before people start cheating their way to the top. That's not to say that everyone cares about achievements in games. I know for a fact many don't, but this will discredit Medieval's entire achievement system and make it irrelevant to folks who really want to work for them.

We'll be putting together a detailed review when we've got some more time in with the various classes. Right now, with the Merchant experience tainting it, it wouldn't be very fair. I'm sure that hero class does have its merits. It was kind of interesting hawking items to Sims, and they do visit the lot very often when a Merchant is open for business. For now, I hope my rambling gives you some insight into what we think of it until we can compose an organized review."

"Carl and I have been busy playing Medieval for about 5 straight hours. It's a fantastic new game. We were at Meijer before the sun came up this morning and the clerk had not even put the game on the shelves yet, so a manager needed to be called to unlock where the games were in storage.

Wow...where to begin? Well, there's a ton of overlap with Sims 3, so all of you should feel right at home. But, it is a true RPG with concepts like Experience at the core. Every morning at 9 AM your hero receives 2 main aspirations for the day and you have varying amounts of time to complete those. You also have Quests to complete and each main quest is made up of many small accomplishments — go talk to X and discuss Y, go to the boat and do Z, go to the Village and do Q, etc. All of these things eat up lots of time because you have no option but to walk everywhere.

My biggest tips at this point is to do a little exploring in a forest at the outset in hopes you find some gems you can sell. You can then go into Buy mode and purchase a better bed because all heroes, even the Monarch starts off with truly abysmal beds and it takes forever for them to be fully rested. Cooking decent meals is another thing you want to address early — your only option without going to the village for ingredients is gruel, so going to the village for something like boar meat will provide meals that yield nice buffs — moodlets are called buffs in Medieval. And the Mood Meter is called Focus.

As I stated in another thread, I absolutely love this game.  I was really moving along and my sim is now Elana the Great and level 5, so after reaching level 5, the game switched and now I am playing a spy that is sick and I have to find fountain.  It is so neat, because the spy quarters are attached to the castle and she has to interact with Elana to continue.  This game has so much humor and there is so much activity in the castle, sword fights, music and people playing that game.  It is quite charming and entertaining.  I got the game at 9:30 yesterday and played until 4pm.  I had to stop to go to bed and get up and go to work at  4am, drats.  I am off for two and a half days, so I told my daughter to check on me every once in a while and throw some food in the room, lol.  I can't wait to get home and continue playing. :)
Is it true that cannibals don't eat clowns because they taste funny?

ok In my house I am the big Sim3 player. My hubby tried playing WOW .. but just could not get the hang on it Carl and Metro, from a guys point of view, would this be something that he would like? Would it keep him interested?? He would like to try it.. He likes the look of the trailers..

I agree, this game is a lot of fun.  It's much less open-ended than Sims 3, with the focus on quests and completing assigned tasks, but there seem to be a lot of possibilities to keep a person interested.  So far my bard has been getting most of the quests.  The bards live in the tavern, and mine is a drunkard so it's very convenient for him.  The Fatal Flaw really adds interest to the game.  My king's fatal flaw is that he likes to fight, and beating up a hapless peasant really puts him in a good mood.  Nuff said, back to my game!

Unforunately, when I use tab nothing happens. Not like in Sims 3 but that doesn't mean there isn't an option it just might have a different keybind. I am double checking on the music for you now.


EDIT: I have found no music under options either.  So basically it's just the music that comes with the game which I don't know how to explain other than music you would hear at a Renaissance Fair.

The music is awesome and true to form from what I have heard at Medieval fairs and the like.  I tried the TAB key and it did not work for close up on screenshots.  I can't seem to find the icon for taking movies yet, even though it has it in the file.  I will look around more to see if I can see it. I was just more concentrated on playing yesterday after I got it, lol.

Heh, yea I think we did.  I was looking for the video thing too and it has the options tab like in Sims 3 but i think you have to go under hotkeys to figure out how to use it.  Hot Keys is on my ... menu and according to it the keybind is V.  But I'm on a Mac so there are some differences between them.

I'm not a guy but I am a die-hard WoW fan, and I sympathize with your husband - it takes quite a while to get the hang of.  I was very lucky to have a friend who answered a ton of questions and walked me through a lot of the game for the first 20 levels of my first toon.

I have not had a chance to try Medieval yet, but hope to get some game time in tonight.  My initial impression, based on what I've read, is that this is kind of a hybrid RPG/simulation game.  My gut feel is that this is meant to appeal to a slightly different audience than WoW, and therefore will probably not be as difficult to learn.  Hopefully his past experience won't deter him from trying Sims Medieval.  Plus it sounds like there are enough similarities  to TS3 that you could probably help him learn the game mechanics.

Wrapping up another long day of playing Medieval. Carl and I just nabbed a Platinum victory on the Witch is Back Quest where we used our Knight hero. Lots of fun. The execution scene at the end was epic. We only have 16 QP left, so we'll definitely be finishing the whole Kingdom's New Beginnings Ambition tomorrow.

So jealous.  I've had the game crash on me another three times today so my kingdom still has like 35 QP left to go.  It's frustrating.  I stopped playing Sims Medieval to finish my Crescent Wench challenge.

Sims Medieval ran fine for me until I started messing with the graphic settings. My computer crashed (never had this computer crash before!) three times until I finally went back in and reset to default-no more problems! This was not a game crash; my whole computer went down! Maybe the graphic settings are messing with your game program; just a pure guess.

Anyway I've had a blast playing this game...really has gotten me to do things I would never do with Sims 2 or Sims 3. I love the little quests as you progress. I haven't gotten anywhere near as far as Metro or Carl, but I'm just kind of wondering through.    :D

The sheer length of some of these quests impresses me. If you like The Sims humor, and read the text to the quests, you will laugh once in a while and have more fun. That's in spite of the fact that you'll make many trips to the rabbit holes throughout the kingdom like the forest, and cave. Some of the text is so preposterous I've laughed out loud.

I just played the chinchilla quest where you had to rid the forest of vicious chinchillas who would tear out your throat! The quests are fun and I love the humor in them. I also like how you can choose which quests to do and which hero you want to use, i already wonder how I'll play it different next time even though I'm not very far yet.
