Art appreciation
« on: December 29, 2009, 05:02:06 PM »
Hey, just wondering how much art appreciates, how often, etc.

Also wondering why this isn't in the guide. :P

I think it was $5 a day for a large painting, and only a couple simoleons for a small one when I was working on the guide. It's just so paltry that you'd have to have a ton of paintings to see any significant profits from it. Most people would just sell them. Let me know if this is somehow different. If you want money over time, nectar making with world adventures is the way to go at this point.

One thing I didn't check is if they raise in value when hung on the wall, but also during testing even masterpieces didn't give any sort of decorated moodlet boost, frustrating!

They do increase in value when hung on the wall, and if you have enough high value art around your home you should get either the decorated or well-decorated moodlet (well-decorated with over-emotional trait gives me a +50 boost).

I don't know if having them on the wall makes them appreciate faster than in the inventory, it's not something I worry about.

Hope this helps

EDIT: Just realised I've got the names wrong, with my over-emotional sim, Nicely Decorated = +31 boost, Beautifully Decorated = +50 boost, not sure what Decorated gives me, probably around +18

Thanks, maybe they corrected it or I wasn't using good enough paintings in my testing to get decorated moodlets.

I don't know this to be the case for certain, but I have a few works that have appreciated by well more than 5$ a day.   I didn't really think critically about it, I just noticed one day when I was moving them around that they had increased in value by well over a thousand dollars.  My suspicion at the time was that once the sim that paints the piece dies, the value of the art increases by some factor, as this is true of art in real life.

Any thoughts on this theory?  I guess I'll test it in a few days when my current painters near death state.

In the Sims 2, art supposedly went up in value after the artist died... never tested that for myself.

I hadn't realised art still appreciated in Sims 3.  That's nice to know.

My 12 generation legacy family had all the portraits of the ancestors on the walls and they appreciated a great deal over the generations.

Large paintings appreciate for more money than medium or smaller ones; death of artist is supposed to increase the value of all existing paintings by a set %. Paintings made by the artist after death don't get the bonus, dying multiple times doesn't grant additional bonus.

Thought I'd resurrect this thread rather than start a new one about the same topic (keep all the info together) Anyway, somebody mentioned in passing about whether masterpieces appreciate more than average paintings. I couldn't find any info, so I have decided to do some testing.
I'm only on day 6, so I haven't got any workable statistics yet, but I've noticed a couple of strange things and wondered if anyone else had noticed.
First I have 3 artists working on the same size works at the same time (needs are static) Two of them are artistic and one can't stand art. He gets a negative moodlet that lasts for three hours every time I start him painting, but the odd thing is that his large paintings are often worth more than the works of the other two, who have the artistic trait. That just seems odd lol
Secondly, I'm checking the values of the completed works (which are all hanging on a wall) and they haven't gone up in value yet. That's not surprising as it still is the first week, but there have been a couple of times when I have been recording values, and grade of paintings before I hang them and have noticed that they have gone up in value between being completed and hanging on the wall! At first, I thought it was because they were worth more to start with, but looking over the rest, there have been others that were worth more and painted earlier, but have still not increased in value.

Twinmum, They start appreciating at level 5 and I have noticed if my painter is painting near midnight, the painting he finishes after midnight already has an appreciated value. Hopefully that makes sense!

Two things that I've noticed that might help with the testing process (or might not) one is that if a Sim paints the same picture twice the later ones are generally worth less than the first one (which I suppose makes sense, after all they're 'copying' their original work at that point... maybe), the other is that I've noticed, or think I've noticed appreciation levels rising instantly if the artist skilled up during the painting of that picture, I would have to test this to see that it wasn't just me the after midnight thing Ester mentioned.

Yeah, I noticed about the first one painted each day already has the appreciated value. One thing I was keen to find out is if masterpieces appreciate more than average or brilliant pieces, or if it is based purely on starting value.
My test run is waiting for me to get back to it, but currently I have three walls (one for each artist) and each wall has eight days of paintings on it - about 35 paintings each wall in a variety of sizes. There are a number of masterpieces and several brilliant paintings. The rest are all average.
I'm keeping a spreadsheet with details of every painting, when it was painted, it's grade, original price, the level of the artist (including what challenges they have completed) and the size of the work. Then each day, I'll review all the ones painted on that day each week and record the new value ie. on Wednesday week 3, I'll record values for all works painted on Wednesday week 1 and 2.
After several weeks I should see some workable results.
I will also have one of the artists die at some point to see how much that will impact on the price too

My sim just painted a masterpiece worth 3,112.  As soon as she was done, I moved it to her inventory and when I looked, it had already appreciated almost 100.00.  I about dropped my teeth when I saw that.  Just thought I would share that.

The instant appreciation is more in line with the painting being finished in the first hours after midnight and not with the artist leveling up during the painting. I have several paintings by each artist that were the first of the day and appreciated straight away, yet the artist's level didn't go up till a later work.
As for the copies being worth less, I hadn't noticed that, but I went and did a quick check and I think you may be wrong there. I haven't checked all the doubles, but one that my artist pained twice in the same day, the first one is currently worth 623 and the second one she painted is worth 820

Fair enough, I'd just noticed that with several paintings my Sims painted duplicates of later copies were worth less, I noticed because even if it's a picture I like duplicates go to the consignment store, but obviously I want to keep the more expensive one so I check which has the greater starting value and so far it's always been the original. Are the two you found that were the same the same level ie both average or both brilliant etc? if they are then it's obviously just co-incidence in my game.
