What should I do to prepare for WA
« on: December 20, 2009, 12:29:14 PM »
So, I'll be getting WA for christmas and I'm a lil worried about installing it. Will any of the patches I downloaded interfere with the expansion? I'm thinking I should save a copy of my game just in case but as tech-savvy as I am ( :-X) I've never had to do that before so I'm not 100% sure on that process.

Any suggestions? I'm probably worrying more than I should but I'd be really angry if I lost all of my current progress in Sims.

I'll have to let someone else instruct you on saving a backup copy of your game.  But as long as your game is up to date with updates and patches, World Adventures should install just fine.

Well, making a backup of any kind of computer file is pretty simple: Just copy what you want to the desktop, or burn it to a CD.

:-\  Well, I figured such a large file as my Sims 3 game would need something special done in order to save it properly. Anyways, since that isn't the case, that's awesome.  8)

Thanks!

You need only back up the save game files located in your documents folder under Electronic Arts. Backing up your Sims 3 installation folder wouldn't do anything for ya. As for patching, every time I patch up it downloads one for vanilla and one for World Adventures, so they are separate entities and shouldn't interfere with one another... but it never hurts to back up, right?

There shouldn't be any problems with this but it doesn't hurt to make a backup to be safe.

Because I've come across a lot of very strange and just plain wrong directions on how to backup your Sims 3 game I'll try to make it clear:

I'm thinking I should save a copy of my game just in case

It is not possible to do that, games or programs installed on your computer can't be copied. That's okay because you don't need it; the game disk is your backup. If something goes completely wrong you will need to uninstall the game and reinstall from the disk.

So: DO NOT copy anything in your Program Files folder. Copies of those files are unusable anyway.

What you DO need to copy is located in your Documents/Electronic Arts/The Sims 3 folder. You will want the Saves, the Downloads if you have any, maybe Custom Music if you use that.
The simplest thing to do is to copy the entire The Sims 3 folder. Right-click the folder and choose Copy. Then go where you want to place the copy, like the Desktop or a USB flash drive. Right-click and choose Paste.

Then if something should go wrong after installing WA or a patch you can get the saved games from the copied folder and place them back in the Documents/Electronic Arts/The Sims 3 folder and they should be in your game again.

Hi Arafel

All of this advice of course is excellent - here is my 2 cents, having had just weird, freaky, and bizarre happenings: Save often. Look at your family tree EVERYTIME you travel. Romances, children, and weird things happen even if your sim is single - and married as in my case  :P

If you are not a patient person, prepare to become so! This is really a fun game despite my grumblings! Small annoyances can occur, and I have learned the hard way just to "roll with it".. not a easy thing when you are type "A" personality!!  ;)
I will love him and squeeze him and pet him and call him George!!

Thanks for all the advice and the directions. I'll be sure to follow PJ's instructions.

Luckily I haven't had any really serious buggy issues with the sims 3 so far. I'm praying it stays that way! And I have forced myself to get in the habit of saving often -my pc used to just shut sims down with no warning and I all my progress would be lost! Man that was not a good time to be around me!  >:(  Thankfully that doesn't happen anymore -but I still save!

Ok, Just a quick update.

So far there haven't been any issues with the game or any weird happenings with any of my Sims.  ;D

I created a whole new Sim to test out World Adventures and all it has to offer and so far I'm loving it. It is hard, though, to decide what to focus on, such as making nectar or just go exploring tombs. I'm already going to have to move the Sim to another lot because the small house filled up quickly with all the relics she is collecting. Plus i'll need a bigger garden for her soon. Even so, that's not a bad problem to have -I enjoy builing my Sims new homes ;)
