I have the same question as Filly.  I don't use CC because I am so afraid of crashing my game.  The only exceptions I have made to this rule is a wedding chapel I downloaded from the exchange (which I believe the person who uploaded it said there was no CC in it) and patterns that I like (there is one person on the exchange who makes tons of good, seamless patterns and I have absolutely no interest in spending time trying to create patterns on my own).  I'm already obsessive with my building, decorating and recoloring...I would never get to actually play my Sims if I started working on patterns, too.

I recolor everything and have saved a number of walls/furniture/clothing that I would be happy to share, but most of it uses the patterns I have gotten from the exchange.

Thank you!

WOW!  I never really thought about that.  I use a lot of patterns from the exchange too.  My only download from there I actually use.  (Ok, I also have downloaded hair color)  Pam, what's the official word on the patterns?
What?  Grannies can't play games?
I speak perfect Nooblik, (and some Simlish)!

That sounds interesting. I will keep an eye on your uploads. ;)

I'm not 100% sure, but I wouldn't think that patterns count as CC in this case, even though they technically are.

The big fear, of course, is that CC will damage your game.  And the fear is totally justified, because if the person making it isn't as skilled as they need to be, it can.  But another major problem with CC items is that if you don't actually have it yourself and you download something that uses it (like a building), it will cause problems.

However, patterns are different.  The easiest way to make them is to use the official Create-A-Pattern tool.  And, if you download something that was redone with a custom pattern, it installs the pattern along with it.  So (as it seems to me, at least), there isn't a whole lot that can go wrong in that case.

But it would still be best to wait on an official opinion.

I actually asked about custom patterns pretty soon after I joined the forum, and I got this:

Custom patterns are the least of the evils, in my opinion.  However, I've downloaded some that were just a mess and I haven't put them back into my game after my most recent reinstall.  I have a better idea of what to look for now, though, so it shouldn't be as bad next time.  :)

This is pre-Swap Shop, so I think Pam interpreted my question as whether I should use custom patterns as opposed to could. Or else she's being cryptic as always.  ;) I'm pretty sure she uses them herself if that makes a difference.

Wait a sec, paterns are made with Create a Patern right? Why are we calling those things CC if they are technically aloud to be made by EA?
They don't really care about reall CC I've read somewhere though, but selfmade patterns with Create a Patern simply can't be called Custom Content.

That's a good point.  I think we are asking for clarification because custom content is traditionally anything made by someone other than EA.  Hundreds and hundreds of those patterns on the exchange weren't made by EA, even if they were made with the Create A Pattern tool.  I know at least that's why I was asking if it was considered CC or not, because I am guilty of installing patterns not created by EA.

What Filly said.  I would love to share my recolored items with the folks here but most or all of them use patterns that I downloaded from TS3 exchange.  I don't want to offer them here if this would be in violation of any of the community rules.  I will say I'm really picky about the patterns that I download and have found a couple of trusted members on the official TS3.  I stick with their work in all but very rare cases and I have not had any problems with it, both in terms of how it looks in game and the fact that it doesn't seem to hurt game performance in any way.

Than I see no reason why you shouldn't upload it. Seems like you know a few things about patterns which can come in handy for a lot of us.
Uh, I had send you a mail by the way, a few days ago. Maybe you should check your inbox. :)

I could be wrong, so don't take this at face value.  All of us at one time have downloaded things from the exchange.  I quit quite a while back after everything that had happened.  I personally would not upload anything to our exchange that I had gotten from the sims exchange, only because I feel what we make is the most important to upload.  I will say, there are alot of trusted members, but my sister had downloaded a world from the exchange by a very, supposed, honest member.  They had said there was no CC and it would work fine, come to find out, when it started snowing in my sisters game, I guess that gave her the first clue that there was something else downloaded.  By the time she deleted it, it had ruined her game.

I really don't think patterns would be a problem, but I guess that would really be up to Carl or someone higher than myself.  I guess that was only an opinion, not really saying no one should upload something from the exchange.  I have been wrong before, "sigh".  lol. :)

Patterns are CC indeed, Leto. The problem is that many people think that any CC is CCC. There is a big difference between Custom Content and Corrupted Custom Content. Things as simple as a piece of clothing or a pattern hardly ever come corrupted, and downloading stuff such as furnitured lots, worlds and sometimes households is where the problem lies. As long as we keep the swapshop safe, and avoid uploading creations of unknown members (random guy with less than 10 posts wants you to upload a house that he made, and he assures you that there is no custom content in it. Would you download it?) everything will be alright.

No, I will not indeed. And that's not because the guy is a newbie, but I will not download anything from anyone I don't know. And 'don't know' is something else than 'known in real life.'
As one of my buddies here will ask me to try something out I sure will. I have a copy or more of my save file anyway, so if things are getting corrupted here it will only cause me a scolding between me and my pc and 30 minutes of my time to get my game back to work again.

I have two selfish wishes.

1.  More starter homes.

Twinmum shared a little beauty (her entry in the July 2010 building contest) but that is currently the only one in the Swap Shop.

Selfishly, I'd like a range, in different styles, at or below the starter funds (without money cheats) for a single sim, a pair of sims and family sims (ie two bedrooms, maybe furnished for a baby/toddler or child).  Something different and special to move my newly created sim(s) into.

2.  The complete range of Late Night bars in a form that would fit in better with the other neighbourhoods.

I know that there are a couple already uploaded but I'm greedy, I want the complete set.  I know that I could just download and play Naga's Sunset Valley 2.0 (thanks) but I'd also like to add some good looking bars/dance halls to my existing games.

I was also hoping that the ones that gerrr00 shared in this thread http://www.carls-sims-3-forum.com/index.php/topic,2383.10.html would also appear on the exchange.

------
P.S.

I read, with interest, the discussion about patterns.  I notice that there isn't a section in the Swap Shop for them.  I look forward to finding out the 'official view' on sharing those created with EA's tool.

I had not even thought of sending stuff to Carl.  :-[  It never crossed my mind, I must be getting old.  Hehe.  I will do it as soon as he is not busy.  Thanks for liking them!

Hopefully patterns are OK, I've already submitted two  :-\. To Gheez, I also sent in a starter apartment (not a high rise), and I have a more conventional starter here which I'll send in if I have the time. Makes me wonder what else has been submitted already, I can't wait to see what everyone's done.  :D

What I'd love to see is some really original buildings and community lots. I've recently built a petrol station, Simstar's built an arcade, and I'm sure there's plenty of other real-life lots that can be adapted for The Sims. I'd also like to see some World Adventures tombs if there's anyone here who can make them, I'm not very good with the testingcheatsenabled cheat. I'm glad to see tons of Late Night clubs being submitted but Ambitions lots would also be good; Sunset Valley and Riverview are sorely in need of their own Consignment stores and Fire Stations.
