Part 4-The Wedding Attempt
Finally, it was the day she had dreamed about since she was young. Everything was ready, there was no need to wait. Dean was standing at the altar. She had been forced to wait inside until the guests had all sat down, due to the lack of an outside hiding place. After what seemed like a decade, the seats had filled up and everything settled. With her two youngest girls holding her veil and Elize (who had dyed her precious ketchup-red hair back to blonde, just for her) beside her Emma felt she could do anything. She straightened her dress, slipped on her cream high heels and took several deep breaths. After she had taken a last glance in the mirror and touched up her already perfect eyeshadow. Now all she had to do was walk the 100 yards to the recently bought pearly gate, signifying the beginning of her very own heaven.
She was as pale as a ghost, and was staring at the bottom of a dark grey robe, surrounded by a mysterious mist. What had gone wrong? Her hands were clasped together-she appeared to be begging. The creature still showed no mercy, and made her shake his bony, skinless hand. She felt an incredible desire to just let go, but somehow knew that she must cling to life no matter how much it hurt-and she simply had to tell them. She couldn’t hold on to this life state- somewhere between life and death-very much longer. Feeling yourself evaporate, slowly fading away, is not a very pleasant experience.
“NO! I can’t lea…Nat...chess…” she managed to squeeze out of her rapidly dissolving throat before simply disappearing into a small urn. Natalie still knew what to do. They may have fallen out, big time, but she must still win this. It was her lucky day. Sinking into the soft leather dining chair seemed like the most natural thing she had ever done since the graveyard visit. This could only be won by logic. Luck wouldn’t hurt, though.
And lucky it was. If she hadn’t noticed that weak spot in the Reaper’s seemingly flawless playing strategy, her mother would not be here today. It took just a single move after discovering the fault, and a life was claimed back. The whole family were now forever in her debt. Even better than that, however, was the fact that last night’s quarrel would possibly be forgotten. Also, while her parents were busy celebrating the revival late at night with a bottle of nectar, key lime pie and lobster thermidor, there were many opportunities to sneak out. Natalie could see her beloved George yet again, and have her own romantic meal at the café. Emma would tutor her, and report cards would go back to normal. All could be just right.
If you forgot her 10 brand-new enemies, massive muscles and an unbearable desire to fight, run wild, and to be a barbarian.
