The Complicated Life of Natalie Kindler
« on: February 06, 2011, 04:49:36 PM »
Self-explanatory, really. Simstar insprired me to write a non-dynasty/legacy story. So, here it is, I guess! I hope you like it!

                                    Prologue
Natalie loved her mother, and her father. She loved her sisters Elize and Mia. She even loved her pet goldfish, caught when she was only three. But most importantly of all, she loved Jacob. He was perfect. And dead.

Chapter One
Yet again, Mia had managed to get a detention. Her philosophy was that if you had to do it, then you may as well enjoy it. School was no different. Why bother with homework, when there were so many parties to be enjoyed? So many romantic interests to be found? So many friends to be made? For her, teachers were the devil in human form, harsh and terrifying. Handing out punishments and essays like candy, they secretly desired nothing less than blood. Her blood. Whenever she stepped into the High, she felt a mixture of fear and wonder. The headteacher’s eyes were as deep as the Pacific, yet as shallow as a mere puddle.  Somehow, they seemed to…glow? But this was no time for speculation. She had a punishment exercise to complete.

Meanwhile, Dean worried about his step-daughter. He was not her birth father, but it seemed not to matter. He loved her almost as much as he loved Emma and Natalie. As much as he tried, however, he could not love Elize. He was not even on speaking terms with her. She was not really related to any of them, for a start, so he didn’t see why he must even see her, let alone like her! But he guessed that life was, well, life, and that to get married to his beautiful fiancée then he had to deal with it.

The wedding was planned-right down to where each guest was sitting, whether they would eat the chocolate trifle or the strawberry gateau, and if they planned to wear a cream outfit or a peach-coloured one. Although Emma wanted to wear a tangerine dress almost more than she wanted to marry Dean, this was impossible. Mia couldn’t tolerate any shade of orange, and even peach was a stretch. And by no means was a dress more important than her not-so-little girl. She was everything to Emma. Natalie-well, she was okay. Her own blood daughter, but nothing special.  A high achiever, reaching for the stars (and closer to getting there every day). That’s Natty in a sentence. Emma hated to admit it, but she was jealous. Not just of her talent, but of her flawless personality, ambitious, friendly, really lucky and a genius. Perfect combination, right? But it also made for a very boring, bland and frankly irritating girl. Irritating because she was just so darn perfect, and yet so likeable as well! Life was so unfair. She’d learned that a long way back, as a young teen herself.

*flashback*
Emma rushed through the door, into the arms of her mother. For all this effort, she received a blank stare. Her mother was closer to the point of no return every day. She could not be convinced to go to therapy, although funds were available. Suddenly, it hit her-what she must do to save her mother from depression. She slowly snuck through the door, avoiding the patch of mould growing on one of the floorboards. She scrawled a note for her mother on the back of a letter that was presumably holding yet more unpaid bills. She lifted the phone and called Child Protection. Then she ran, as far as her small and scarily skinny legs could carry her. The fear, hanging over her head like a cloud full to bursting with rain, evaporated with every step. It was over.

Well, I guess the centering didn't work on the chapters then. ;) Neither did the spaces, but I'll edit that, or try to.
Anyway, it wouldn't let me type on the author's notes, so I will type them on this post.

The depression suffered by Emma's mother is my way of portraying the glitch I keep getting where nothing will make them happy. Just thought I'd let you know.
Please alert me to any typos etc, I did proofread several times, and spellcheck, but you never know.
And-any critisism is welcome. I'm not looking for praise, I would prefer to know what I must improve at!

Thanks to anyone who takes the time to read this!

This sounds like one of the bugs we've recently discovered.  Try restarting the game or buying an expensive bed.  These are temporary solutions until EA fixed the problem, but they seems to help.

I know, it just really annoys me as I get it in pretty much every game, even with the expensive bed. Thank you for your concern, though! :)

I am writing the next few parts now, but I doubt they will be up tonight, as I am really tired. :P

Well, I have a slight problem. The Kindler's house was destroyed by a meteor. Somehow I will fit this into my story, which means I have to rewrite quite a bit. The gameplay is also now behind too.   ::)

Anyway, enjoy this super-short, extra-mushy update! And comment, please! :)

Natalie was contemplating the upcoming wedding. She was glad that her mother had met the apparent love of her life-but she also knew he would almost certainly not be the only one. You see, Emma did not have a normal ambition, unlike most people. She didn’t want to become a top inventor. She had never even considered working as a doctor. In Natty’s eyes, a criminal would be more respected than her mother. Just the word felt disgusting on her lips-her own mother aspired to be a gold digger.  Just thinking about it made Natalie shiver; how could anyone want that in life? That’s like actually asking to be seen as a disgrace by everyone you know! Luckily Elize and Mia had not found out about this. However, despite it being unspeakable, just wrong to think, not mentioning extremely disloyal, she really hoped that her father would find out about it. He was a lovely, well-mannered man, and she didn’t like the idea of his heart being broken when he discovered he was being used. It would be bad enough to break off an engagement, but so much worse for a marriage.
She knew she should not concern herself with other’s quirks and general behaviour, but it was hard not to notice Mia failing at school and Elize stumbling from clubs at all hours. The teachers were saying that Mia would be unable to graduate (Elize had not had high enough grades either), leaving her future prospects in shatters. Not that she had many anyway, with the selection of subjects she took. Herself, she was a star pupil loved by all teachers who knew her. She had chosen to study all of the sciences, as well as economics and additional maths. Unlike many, though, she could not honestly say that both her parents were proud of her. She also could not say to anyone that her parents were unmarried, or ask about the adoption papers she had once found. She couldn’t mention the fact that Elize and Mia, her lovely big ‘sisters’, were throwing their life away. It would just tip her mother over the edge yet again. That not happening was the only thing every single member of her household desired.

Today, the teen’s report cards had been issued. Somehow, Mia had managed to escape an F; instead getting a D. Nobody had any idea how, though, as it was no secret that she had only got into school once this week, to fix the boiler. But the main concern at the moment was Elize. She had somehow managed to get a baby, although no-one was living with her, she had been single all the while and two days ago she had not been pregnant. It was very puzzling to all involved, especially as she didn’t remember adopting a child. Even if she had tried to, she would not have been allowed-a young boy, that she had named Tigger, had been taken away from her before. This had happened to many people since that meteor had landed in the park. Now infants outnumbered the extremely confused adults.
However, as things stood now, none of the girls had any chance of getting a boyfriend or later, a husband, of a similar age. Natalie had lost her first admirer, her first boyfriend and her first love. A secret one, of course, but most decent ones are. This meant silent nights in her bedroom, crying herself to sleep. Skiving lessons, especially Personal and Social Education. Her teacher, Mrs Dew, would notice the invisible scars. However, not going to lessons wouldn’t keep her safe. Even if it seemed that she had cried a river, it wouldn’t be enough to sweep her away. The only thing for it was to avoid eye contact, avoid conversations. From now on, she would only look into the eyes of her opponents at the start of a fight. Spending hours at a time on the treadmill had done her wonders, and she was now the most slender and muscular girl in the High. Perfect.
“Natty! Teatime! You should listen! Natalie! Now! Don’t make me come in…” Emma slowly opened the door leading to the girl’s bedroom. It was too late now, and going in the room had never been a real threat anyway. Mia’s side of the bedroom was unusually neat, and Natty’s was not completely spotless. Strange. The cleanliness of this cramped bedroom was usually the only thing the two sisters argued about. Mia was a typical teenager, whereas Natalie was almost obsessive-compulsive when it came to neatness. Emma shook herself. She had let her mind wander, avoiding this huge issue. Where was her daughter? It was so unlike her to go out, and she would never do so without permission anyway! It was almost curfew-what would the neighbours think? She quickly ran about and screamed, again and again, for her lost daughter.
“What WERE you thinking? Exams…grades…report cards…personality changes…worried sick…must have looked mad, you were just at the park…why didn’t you tell me? Why? What’s happened? Natalie! Listen! How could you? How?”
Emma’s frantic questioning seemed to drift into one of Natty’s ears, then straight back out the other. She just didn’t seem to be able to tune in, or even want to, as she had discovered a secret world, one just about her and what could have been. Actually, Natalie Kindler had gone to the graveyard and met all the dead teens. She now had five romantic interests, all in one night, all perfect. They would never age, never be able to marry, never even have children, and never have any responsibilities. They didn’t even have to go to school. Mothers didn’t lecture them if they were caught out by the police. They wouldn’t be caught out by the police, full stop. Ah, back to the lecture.
“Speak! Spit it out! Is it the wedding-but Dean’s your father! It can’t be! You know I’m not good at this kind of thing, so just tell me! I can’t guess, you know I can’t,” and with this, she flopped onto the bed beside her unloving little girl. Natty stood up and simply walked two steps away from her overly-emotional mother.
“I really don’t want to talk about this,” she said in a monotone.
“You have to! I’m your mother, and you clearly have some problems!”
“I suggest that you leave this room. If you decide not to, then I am afraid I must leave, mother.”
Emma stood up, shook out her skirt and left the room.
They finally had enough money to start preparing the garden for the upcoming wedding. Dean couldn’t wait any longer now, and neither could his fiancée. The fence was sugar-white, the carpets rose and the picnic baskets made of caramel-coloured weaved willow. There was a large statue of the founder of civilised society on the left, which was an expensive but lovely addition. Provided that there were no more meteor showers, it should be suitable for several generations. To tell the truth, he could now not wait for Mia to move out and leave the happy family alone. Dean wanted another child, and Emma must feel the same. She kept giving Elize, who was now carrying her newborn around, wistful looks. It must be torture for her. Yes, the wedding must happen as soon as possible. Now would be suitable, before Emma went back to her job as a receptionist on Monday. He picked up the phone and dialled everyone on the proposed guest list.
“Yes, it’s a surprise for her. Of course, we’ll have the outfit ready here. Just bring yourself. Bye now!” He hung up, rolling his eyes. Telephone calls were not his strong point, but these ones were special cases.

Oh, and take all the spaces out and it reduces to about 3 seconds. Lol  :D Enjoy! It still seems really short though.
