Help/Advice on my Dynasty family tree problem
« on: February 05, 2011, 05:13:37 PM »
I've avoided posting any new information on my dynasty thread because my gen 3 now has no family tree.  Zero.  You can't even open the family tree icon.  Her spouse, parents, and child all show her in the proper relationship but she has not tree herself.  My concern is this could cause problems further down the road and I'd hate to spend more time on a dynasty that is going to crash.  Any help or advice or knowledge about a similar bug would be great.

Secondly, my now grieving gen 2 shows his deceased wife in his family tree as his fiancee!  Not as his dead spouse.  Of course, all this family tree mess started up when they traveled to buy vacation homes.  I do not have any files that predate when the glitz occurred so if this is going to be huge mess it means the end of that dynasty and either a redo with my original founder or an entirely new dynasty.  I really don't know where to go with this.
What?  Grannies can't play games?

Of course, all this family tree mess started up when they traveled to buy vacation homes.

Sigh.  ::) Unfortunately, I'm not surprised it had something to do with a vacation.

I do not have any files that predate when the glitz occurred so if this is going to be huge mess it means the end of that dynasty and either a redo with my original founder or an entirely new dynasty.  I really don't know where to go with this.

I don't either either, Joria. I feel terrible for all of the bugs that plague challenge players. Vacation bugs in particular can be game breakers, so prepare yourself for the worst. I'm not saying start over now, but that's something you might consider simply because you'd save yourself time in the end. What's a big unknown for you is if this will indeed lead to total meltdown situations like going on vacations and having your Sims be invisible. I had that happen in the Grandmaster challenge and it's instant game over at that point.

The family trees do get bugged sometimes.  I had that very same thing happen where some members of my Dynasty family showed the tree and some didn't.  It came mostly near the end.  I don't think it will necessarily crash your game, but it's inconvenient for it not to work properly.

The thing about the deceased spouse being a fiancee is normal.  It's been like that since Sims 3 was released.  Marriage vows are until death, so when one dies, the marriage is over.  But they still have a high special relationship.  It's because ghosts can be revived, so the game deals with it a bit of a strange way.

Thanks Metro and Pam.  I'm leaning more and more toward doing it over, or rather doing a new one.  I don't think I have the heart to redo the Thyme family.  I think what I'll do is start a new one for the HOF and continue randomly with the Thyme family just to see how far it does go before it goes totally belly up.  It was good to hear that maybe the family tree issues aren't necessarily game breakers but I think it's kind of risky putting all my eggs in that particular basket.  I'm continuing with them at the moment, mostly because I promised Carl I'd finish the nectary for the Swap Shop, and I've invested a ton of time and effort into making it just right.

Joria, I had a broken family tree in Clan Douglas when Gen 3's husband travelled alone to France and acquired an unknown child.  From then on, the founder didn't show as being related to the rest of the family.  It was annoying, but it didn't seem to me to be a game breaker - other than James being able to do romantic interactions with his descendants, there were no further problems.  But I did stop sending my dynasty members on trips, as it didn't seem worth the risk of further problems.  It's up to you of course, but after all the work you've put in with the Thymes, I hope you'll continue if you feel able.  Good luck.

Joria - I had this happen in my Legacy, the solution is also what cause me to loose the first half of my Family Tree. I had to export my family and move them to a new Town and then I lost all the Dead or Non-Household Sim Relations and the Ownerships but I got my Family Tree working again. So if you do decide to do that it may be best to sell off your Partnerships so you can afford to buy them back in the new area. Again not the best solution but it fixes your future family tree.

Thanks, samoht and all.  If I move them though, then it breaks the dynasty rules.  At the moment I'm taking a break from the legacy and just playing for fun, building stuff and such.

This is a nasty bug, and nobody is really 100% sure as to what actually causes it.  For this reason, I have all but sworn off travel.  I will make a trip to each location (saving before I go), buy everything I need, gather all the plantables, excavate what little I can, and return home.  My current founder plans to SuperMax Martial Arts, so I will max the skill quickly at home and travel just enough to complete the tournament challenge (and thanks to the "Bishop Takes Headkick" tournament event, I know how to do it quickly), and complete the rest at home.

I've been having more than enough bugs in the Dynasty challenge, so I won't risk one that's relatively preventable.
