Sims and Forums (gamewise, not this forum)
« on: February 04, 2011, 08:30:15 PM »
What is the difference between an evil sim "trolling on the forum" and an inapproprate sim "making an innapproprate forum post" other than "troll on forum" is an option for evil sims and "make inapproprate forum post" is for Inapproprate Sims. I think they're the same thing but correct me if I'm wrong. Carl or Pam if possible please answer me. Thanks (:

They are probably the same thing, or at least close enough.  That one action doesn't really do much.  Your Sim gets to check and see if anyone responded, but that's about it.

To me, 'Trolling' is where one antagonizes other people or makes sarcastic remarks and to 'Make an inappropriate forum post' would be to make a post that isn't really "bad" or "wrong" but doesn't conform to the forum's personal tastes.
Both types of Sims actually get an increase in fun when they do this  ;)

From my real experience on many forums I have joined, I have figured out the meaning:

Trolling: Trolling actually means making off-topic posts and posting wrong thing on wrong topic, like posting about history where the topic is actually about modern time.

Inappropriate forum post: This is nearly same thing as trolling, but in a harsh way. It can be posting insults, etc. and other things that must not be posted.

Traditionally, those two definitions are reversed.  Trolling is posting on a forum with the intent of causing someone to get angry or upset (this is why evil sims can do it).  An inappropriate forum post is one that is either off-topic, or while possibly on-topic, somehow violates the forum specific rules.

Now I wonder:  does trolling have an affect on relationships?

From what I can gather, the term "trolling" originated from the term "trawling", a form of fishing in where you drag a net behind a moving boat. So in other words, trolls work by deliberately antagonising people on forums, just to see who "bites" and gets dragged into a fight. Like Evil Sims who get "Fiendishly Delighted", a troll will take pleasure in just seeing how much grief he can cause and how many people he can offend. An inappropriate post can be similar, but usually results from someone getting too emotional and saying something rash. Rather than being offensive for the sake of it, the poster might be rigidly defending their political views, casually expressing prejudice, angrily criticising someone on the forum and so on. In short: Trolls are out specifically to stir up trouble, and inappropriate posters cause trouble by lack of civility. In shorter: what mtglady said.  :P

In-game, I think 'Make Inappropriate Forum Post" and "Troll Forum" are the same thing, they've just been given different names to reflect the associated traits. Kind of like how "Have Evil Shower" is just a renamed version of "Have Shower", just because it seems more like something an Evil Sim would do. From what I've experienced they don't get different responses, although I could be wrong. Hope that's helpful.

Almost ... but it is hooks, not nets.

Quote
Trolling is a method of fishing where one or more fishing lines, baited with lures or bait fish, are drawn through the water.

In other words, dangling hooks to see who wants to get into an argument  ;D

... which we would never do in this Forum  ;)

I always thought it was the same thing, sort of. But I figured "Troll on forum" meant the person would do something like Yahoo Answers (no avatar, posting offensive, off topic, opposite ends of serious matters: ex: "i'm pregnant and my boyfriend wants me to get an abortion" then two minutes later that same person posts "I'm 15 and me and my boyfriend want a baby" or stupid questions like "I'm 5'1". How tall is that?" just to get attention or reactions) While "Make Inapproprate Forum post" would be using all caps and cuss words and typiiiingggg lyke ur a bored 14-year-old w.2much time on ur handz  (this is the only way i can explain my last point so please keep the last example for explanatory purpouses) but had the same concept (poster simply looking for attention and reactions, violating forum rules and terms, offensive and irrevelant posts, spamming maybe but would spamming be on the list of trolling?)

Now I know why I'm not always happy. I've never trolled here before. Hmmm, where should I start...

This is quite an interesting topic. I've never was actually busy with what sims where doing in their computers. If the troll on a forum do they have a relationship decrease with another sim in town from which the post was posted?

Do you have an evil sim? Trolling on forums can only be done by evil sims. Same with inapproprate forum posts. I'm not sure if the relationships decrease as they go by usernames on the forum so you don't know who responded. But with both traits you can "check for responses" when someone does respond, you simply get the same sort of response as you would on facebook fan pages, yahoo answers and other forums: "You have just been reported" "get a hobby" "you should be banned/blocked" or the classic accusation of being a troll. Claire Ursine had this response after devoloping the evil trait (she became evil the day her daughter was taken away by the father of her child/ex-boyfriend Jared Frio, he may have been a jerk but he raised his girl quite well)
