I don't have Pets, but it definitely started happening after I installed the latest patch.
I don't think the fertility treatment would affect the gender, only the amount of babies the sim has.
I'm really liking being able to have mixed gender twins without the fruit/doctor trick. It makes the game much more realistic.

I had 1 set of mixed gender twins in one of my storys, I ate 3 apples when she was 1 day pregnant then asked a doctor (which was her husband) to determine the gender which showed I was having a boy, then I ate 5 watermelens and watched kids tv. I didnt have any fertility treatment.

This is the "old" way of getting mixed gender twins.  It looks like we may be able to have them without any interference from the player now.

So they'd just happen randomly?

It's true, My sim had mixed gender twins. The dad had the fertility treatment and I didn't bother with watermelons/apples or kids TV. I didn't even check what gender it was!  :)

Here they are:

Is this a common thing that happens now?

So now it's possible to get mixed-gender twins without the doctor trick? Does the old method still work?

Thanks Sportsfan. I'm glad it's still possible to trigger mixed-gender twins, because I don't want to leave it all up to chance!

Does it say in the patch that mixed gender twins can just happen randomly?

I just had triplets, two boys and a girl. The mother ate nothing but autumn salads.  No talking to a doctor or anything to determine gender, so looks like it is indeed random now.

So, is it a rare thing still? Or common to have mixed gender twins? Say if my sims had fertility treatment how common would it be now to have mix gender twins/triplets?

If you have twins, there is equal chance of having 2 girls, 2 boys or one of each. Same thing applies with triplets.

The only thing I can guess is that maybe she didn't eat quite enough apples.  Mine usually eat around 10 and I always get the gender I want.

According to the official game guide for the sims 3 (page 175), you only need to eat 3 apples or 3 watermelons to increase the chances of getting a specific gender.

A lot of the guide is wrong and it takes more than three apples or watermelons.

Yes, 10 of apples or watermelons are guaranteed to work, while 3 doesn't usually help.
